Give "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" a chance... and Herzog's documentaries, too.

The richer part of the family already knew from the condemnation that was well-publicized--and what drew the Mayleses, if I remember. That Edie enjoyed the publicity and becoming a cult object for those who enjoy flamboyance is not, in my view, exculpation. Mentally ill people cannot give informed consent and I don't think that parading these eccentrics served any higher purpose in enlightening the public.

I noted that others diagree with me about "Grey Gardens" and I think that we are generally in accord, so thanks for your comment--and not just the praise part of it!

Great list.

Your very far off regarding Grey Gardens and your insistence it's the worst kind of exploitation.

Several people begged the filmmakers to make the film in order to show the richer part of the family what was going on. They were encouraged at several points to not stop filming, but to keep going nad to make it into a film. They finally acquiesced regarding the project which is utterly fascinating and the sisters wound up getting help, Edie got the fame and some decent bucks which is what she always craved. She had a huge following and exploited the movie and her following to have more fame and money... (as it should be).

Anyway, I agree on one hand it is disturbing, on the other very entertaining and if you know the circumstance under which it was made and the outcome it can not be called exploitation...

Instead it's truly one of the best documentaries ever made on several levels.

It doesn't matter your have such a differing opinion on this.. you're still one of the best writers here at epinions and everyone should feel very fortunate you've been writing up a storm.

Keep it up...

I know about the play, to which I would give a wide berth. There's also another film with footage not used in the first one that I will avoid. Others enjoy this exploitation of the mentally ill, I know.

You might be interested to hear that Grey Gardens has been turned into a Broadway play, but I don't know how well it was received. At least now I can understand the promos on the radio were about! -- Telynor

A soap opera may have a backdrop of historical events. In an epic, the protagonist has to be involved with them and reach a heroic and/or tragic end, no?

I enjoyed "The Best of Youth," but felt it coulda been better. You probably didn't give 5 stars to "Heaven."

... you watched quite a lot last month.

I rich and diverse list-- must have made for interesting dreams or day-dreams. My one serious "beg to differ" would be your meager 4 stars for "The Best of Youth"! By the way, what's the difference between epic and soap opera?
