Batter Up - My Top Ten Sports Movies!
Dec 06 '06
The Bottom Line Fire up your team spirit, pop the popcorn and enjoy a good sport's movie today!
I come from a sports loving family. I also come from a family that loves movies -- so as you can imagine one of my favorite things is a good sports movie. Below are my personal ten favorite sports movies. The may not be the ten best classical sports stories (notable classics left off the list include: Bull Durham, Million Dollar Baby, Rocky, Breaking Away) but they are the movies I enjoyed watching the most. Enjoy!
10. Dreamer
This is not a movie that will make it on to very many people's top ten sport movie lists. But I just like it! It makes me smile every time I watch it and I think it is a great example of a sports movie that appeals to younger girls. The movie tells the story of a young girl (Dakota Fanning) and her injured horse's journey back to championship form. It is also a story about family and the bond between fathers and daughters.
9. Rudy
As someone who goes to Notre Dame, I have to include this movie on my list. It is also one of the most famous sports movies of all time. It portrays the story of a young man who dreams of playing football for Notre Dame and tells the story of how hard work and dedication can pay off in the end.
8. Cool Runnings
This is a fun movie - a rare sports comedy. It tells the story of the first Jamaican bobsled team's improbable journey to the 1988 winter olympics. The movie is funny and light hearted and is a great family movie - kids will really enjoy it!
7. Brian's Song
This movie focuses on the friendship between legendary Chicago Bears running back Gale Sayers and his roommate Brian Piccolo. The two are the first interracial roommates in the NFL. The movie also traces Piccolo's battle with cancer and Sayer's unwavering support. This movie is a real tear jerker, but shows how being team mates can transform people into life long friends.
6. A League of Their Own
What a great girl power movie! This movie follows the Rockford Peaches - an all girl professional baseball team during the World War II era. It stars Tom Hanks, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell and Geena Davis and is just the right blend of comedy and uplifting sentiment.
5. Glory Road
Glory Road highlights the journey of the Texas Western Miners from a no name team that nobody had heard of to the NCCA National Championship basketball game against mighty Kentucky. In the championship game, Texas Western was the first team to start an all African American starting line up in the championship game. This is a story about breaking down racial barriers and demonstrating the power of sports to cross racial lines and break down stereotypes.
4. Remember the Titans
This movie is another great story that shows how sports can overcome racism. The movie tells the story of how a group of high school athletes in 1970s Virginia over come racial bias and prejudice to become state champions - and more importantly friends. The movie centers upon what happens after an African American coach (Denzel Washington) takes over as head coach of the football team from a popular and winning white coach. Players on the team initially struggle to get along - but eventually prejudices begin to break down and they start to see each other as fellow athletes and teammates. This is a very touching movie - it made me cry.
3. Pride of the Yankees
This is an old movie that chronicles the championship journeys of the Yankees during their dynasty years. More importantly, however, it centers upon Yankee hero Lou Gehrig, who ultimately is diagnosed with a fatal disease that is later named after him. The final scene in this movie where Gehrig gives his speech to a packed Yankee Stadium will stick in my mind forever.
2. Field of Dreams
This is the best baseball movie ever made. My Dad grew up playing baseball with his Dad and I will never forget watching my Dad watch this movie for the first time. This movie speaks about both the love of the game and the love between a father and a son and how that love can be brought out through sports. Truly great movie.
1. Hoosiers
As a young girl growing up in Indiana, this is one of those movies that to me symbolizes what is special and unique about Indiana -- and that is basketball. It used to be that every winter when sectionals rolled around, whole towns mobilized behind their teams to support them and cheer them onto victory. A recent move to "class basketball" has diminished this tradition and legend, but the memory of it still lives on. This movie tells the story of a small town high school basketball team that takes on the big city boys and win! It is one of the best underdog stories in all of sports.
