The Bottom Line: Get it if you need speed and reliablity. Does NOT jam often. When it does, beware of scanning originals.

I am an attorney and IT manager for a law firm in Connecticut. One of my primary responsibilities is running scanning operations for the firm. When we needed a mobile scanner, attached to one of our laptops via scsi card, I researched what we needed and found the ricoh. I wanted speed, and got it. Supposedly it does up to 60 ppm, I'm not sure. But it's pretty close.
This unit is built like a tank. All parts seem sturdy and industrial. What I mean by this is that take for example the rollers in the ADF. The rubber compound on the rollers feeding the documents in has not shown any sign of deteriation even after..oh..say..85,000 pages worth of scans. Yes. 85,000. Our in-house canon scanners constantly need attention, but this ricoh has been a knock out reliability wise.
I do have one gripe however, and that is how it jams. Some scanners jam a piece of paper and you can extract it with no problem. Not this unit. Sometimes the originals going through get jammed, and then come out with an accordian effect. Crumpled like an accordian. Now this would pose a huge problem if it happened all the time. But it doesn't. In fact, jams are rare with this unit. Now mind you, jams are continguos with room temperature, dampness in the air and paper age. So these are all determinate factors in how it jams.
In reference to the quality of the scans, I have found that it has been a good performer. It does not have on the fly deskewing, or any other software enhancements to the actual scan, but as long as you can keep the glass clean on the unit, the scans will be clear. A simple cleaning of windex usually does the trick if any ink or toner from a copy falls onto the glass.
If you need to get it scanned quickly, have your own scanning software already (we did), and want a scanner that lasts...the ricoh will not disappoint.
