I am 37 years old and recently decided to learn the cello (I currently play the trumpet and piano). I bought this cello three weeks ago from e-bay for $280 (free shipping). It came with a hard and soft case, a metronome, and a cello stand. I took it to a luthier in town to "set it up" (set the bridge, put the strings on, etc) and was prepared to hear him scold me for buying a "cheap" cello. He said it is a great beginner cello. I asked if I should upgrade to more expensive strings and bow, but he said they are not needed. I was thinking that if I kept this cello for 4 months, I would get more than my money's worth since it is close to $100 a month to rent a cello in my town. The luthier said I should keep this cello for 2-3 years before upgrading. I am very happy with my purchase and I am glad I didn't spend so much money as cello web sites suggested. The luthier said it just isn't necessary for a beginner to spend so much.
