Dear pogomom,
You wrote:

That was four years ago.
Thanks for sticking with the program.

I'm older than you! (Reply to this comment)
by Penguinlady
My anniversary date was Dec. 14 of '99, so I'm five days older than you are. Amazing. It seems like decades. I've been through all the phases - initial bewildered enthusiasm, a brief falling away, a roaring return with daily reviews for months, a more temperate cranking out of some pretty workaday reviews, and recently, with an incredible increase in the busy factor of our lives, a falling away once more that finally cost me my hat.
I've seen some of the original stars fade, and have missed their wit and creativity. And since I no longer have the time I once had to browse at leisure, I haven't kept up with some of the newer stars. So yes, I do feel like a dino around here.
But Pogo has always been my most favorite comic strip - I named my late lamented cat Pogo and have most of the old books, as well as a 1952 "I go Pogo" campaign button on my hiking hat - so I definitely relate to your descirption.
Maybe one of these days my life will slow down enough for me to start writing again on a more regular basis - I hope so, because I miss it, and the virtual camaraderie I once enjoyed. Until then, I can always come back and browse.
Mazeltov!

There's them they killt, and them that just up and left (Reply to this comment)
by AggieBrett
I'm more of the latter and less of the former.
It startled me to check just now and see that my own personal sign-up date is now fast approaching its 7th annual lap (June of Ought-Nuthin). It hardly seems fair or accurate to call that an "anniversary," as I pretty much abandoned this corner of the 'net a few years back when it became sufficiently clear that personality and honor and such held no value on this site (dunno that they ever did, actually -- I'm just saying that at a certain point it became undeniably apparent). Now I only poke my head back in here every few months now to see if I'm close enough to suck another ten-spot from the coffers of Brisbane.
To think back on all the time and thought and effort I once wasted on this site... well, I'd be depressed and angry if not for the companion memory of those few dozen glorious souls who, then and now, made the whole damned exercise somehow worthwhile.
You say there's some change in the winds locally? Some new policy or protocol that will yet further erode and degrade what little memory still remains of our passing? Such is life. And as always it falls to each of us to serve as testament to all we saw, all we knew, all we hoped. Like the man said, the honors which matter most shall always be found "graven not on stone but in the hearts of men."
No matter what the official party line, we was fab, babe. Once upon a dreamy day gone by, we was all truly something to see.
[beer salute]
I'll find you somewhere down the line, and what wondrous lies we'll swap come that happy day. ;-)
Til then... I'll just fade back into the murk and remain plausibly deniable.

you have a heard willing to hang with you, you dinosaur...
7 years this spring for me though I am a loner - never being granted titles long, just plugging away from time to time not understanding most of what the more experienced dinosaurs reference...
ignorance, ah, blissful ignorance...
Congrats on the anniversary - 7 years looks good on you - I don't think you've aged in all this time - do review your beauty products soon so the rest of us may follow suit...

Home For Old Dinosaurs? (Reply to this comment)
by kcfoxy
DCS,
I miss folks that are gone, I miss people that are still here but not nearly as much, and I miss not being able to Google over 100 IMNSHO priceless Quick Recipes.
Yup, anything before mid 2003 doesn't even come up when you go to that category and browse, or try to Google it, which used to be a good lazy way to find old stuff.
And speaking of old stuff, we are that here, but like Andyman hinted, it doesn't have to be out with the old but vrai vintage dolls like us are Golden oldies. Hoping I haven't done anything-inadvertently-to offend.
Belated Happy 7th. I miss your presence here and there, know there must be lots going on in that busy Pogo's (and Bella's) Mom life of yours, and just wish I would hear from you, say once a month if at all possible.
xoxoxo to one of Epinion's rare jewels

Only 6 1/2 years for me... (Reply to this comment)
by michiman1
I guess that means I'm not a dinosaur, just a simple Neanderthal. Come to think of it, my wife has referred to me as just that on more than one occasion.
I can't say I have devoted as much as much time as I used to on the site and don't exactly have the same perception of the current state of Epinions. I've always been a quiet outsider type of member... you know, slip in and write a review, read a few opinions, comment on a few Epinions and log off.
You on the other hand (and others like you) are an Epinions gem! You are one of the members Epinions should NEVER forget. Most deserved member on my WOT, to me you are Epinions. The site could not continue without dedicated members like you - if anyone thinks it can, they are sadly mistaken.
Over the years as part of H&G, I've witnessed first hand the devotion you shared with us all. Where's that Epinions Hall of Fame? I'm sorry to read your feeling anything less than appreciated. Maybe this is just the Seven Year Itch, go have a wild one-night stand at Ciao.com and maybe you'll feel better.

Pogo my Pogo,
I too am approaching my seventh year here in the swamp we call Epinions, and I just posted my 1000th review today. I had planned a write-off or some other memorable flourish, but I decided to just let it go by with barely a whisper in its direction.
The community is not what it was, but perhaps given time it will be again. I for one would sorely miss thee and a few others if I were to leave, so like you Ill stick around, keep my head down and what the fur fly as it were.
Outstanding essay My Pogo; it is writers like you that keep me knocking them out.

If we were dinosaurs, I'd want to be stegosauras (Reply to this comment)
by Andyman
Heya Helen. We're really in uncharted territory on the internet. Few communities reach our size and age and level of maturity as a group. It's definitely interesting to stop and reflect over our time together, where we've been, and where we're going.
I just wanted to respond to one little thing before I go. We LOVE our old members. Many of us here at Epinions ARE old members ourselves. I can't imagine how the vicious rumor that we want to "clear old timers out" ever got started. It's completely unfounded.
Epinions would not be what it is without you, Helen. I have a hard time thinking of anyone who has made such a big and positive difference here for such a long time. Without members like you, we wouldn't have the courage or talent to face the future and take on new challenges. Please never again wonder whether we love and value you.

hey there pogo... (Reply to this comment)

It is amazing that you chose this 'quote' and pogo as the focal point of this essay.Given the efforts of Larry/gamblin_man and I recently to lead the site members astray on the boards with a reference to that very 'he is us' thought.
I guessed that many of the younger members might not know who the cartoon character pogo was. I was surprised that many thought of you when they heard 'pogo'. All the thoughts were complimentary of course.
Had the dinosaurs of old continued to 'carry their weight' they perhaps would not have gone missing . . .though I am always reminded of the Far Side cartoon with the 'saurs lounging around puffing on cigarettes.
No, had they continued to contribute as much, as deeply, with such caring as some of the current 'dinosaurs' . . .I am sure they would have been as valued and long-lived as our own Eps 'dinosaurs'.
Very nicely said.

Seven years has brought us joy and loss. The joys seemed to be more short-lived than the losses -which still linger.
I will never forget this site -good or bad- because it brought such wonderful people into my life and broadened it in ways that I'll never be able to repay.
Congrats on your anniversary. I let mine just slip away...

Happy holidays from a fellow dinosaur. Perhaps it isn't all of epinions staff looking for young blood to man/wo-man the site.
But where would epinions be without the talented
writers who gave so much of themselves since 1999? Rhetorical question perhaps.

Happy Seven My Friend!
I passed mine two days ago and I've been contemplating much in (epinions) life.
Regardless of where Eps has been and where Eps is going, me personally - I'm a lucky chick because I've had the distinct pleasure of meeting some great people like you and at least a couple hundred others.
At the end of the day - relationships - that's all that really matters to me.
Much love forever,

There aren't many of us with seven years on the site left, and my gut feelings (fears) about the changes on the site echo your's. This was a grand commentary (and I liked the poem in the comments section, too!).
Happy Holidays!
