Math the fun way!
Written: Dec 10 '01 (Updated Dec 10 '01)
Pros:good learning tools for your child in math, fun story line
Cons:none
The Bottom Line: This is a game that has grown with my daughter from the age of 5 to 7. It re-enforces math learned at school.
When my daughter was two, I was working part time. My baby sitter taught my daughter how to use a computer and ever since I've spent a small fortune on computer games. About two years ago I made one of my better purchases, Disney's Math Quest with Aladdin.
The idea of this game is Aladdin, Jasmine and Abu have been imprisoned by an evil genie named Bizarrah.(You've got to love that name.) Bizarrah has hidden pieces of her lamp in a carnival and upside down pyramid. Your child uses math skills like, addition, subtraction, patterns, estimation and reasoning to rescue them. In order to capture Bizarrah all the lamp pieces must be found as well.
I use Windows 98 but this is also suitable for Macintosh. I put the disk in my CD-rom drive and a install menu came up. I clicked install and followed the on screen directions.
When you first start the game a sign in screen comes up. After typing in the name you click new game. The genie appears, compleate with Robin Williams voice and explains how to save your game and how to get around. He also explains all the ins and outs of the game in detail.
As you go through the game looking for lamp pieces you come upon different activities. This game has more activities then I can remember but I will try and give you as much information as possible.
THE SPIDER WEB
The goal is to try to get the chisel from the mother spider. To do this you feed her babies bugs. You have to try to figure out the right color or shape bug the babies want. Once you've fed the babies you click on the chisel and you are free to pass.
THE NUMBER WALL
Use the chisel from The Spider Web to knock the blocks until you see the numbers underneath. You must click on two gray bricks with numbers then click on a blue brick which is equal to the two gray bricks. When all the sums are correctly added the wall opens.
RESCUE ABU
To rescue Abu you have to trade fruits. There is a sign post that lets you know which fruits are worth what.
Rescue Jasmine
To free Jasmine you must comlpete a mosaic pattern. Half the pattern is done, you must put the right jewels in place to complete the picture.
RESCUE ALADDIN
To free Aladdin you must follow the ancient pharoah's magic potion recipes using just the right number of colored crystals.
MAGIC NUMBER CARD
Here you pick comination of cards that add up to the magic number appearing at the top of the screen.
MISSING NUMBERS
A chart with numbers from 0-99 is on a wall. You need to fill in the missing numbers from the chart.
There are at least 10 more math games. They include rebuilding a temple, a fortune teller and finishing the guardian's necklace.
Disney's Math Quest is filled with so much. Each of the activities changes each time you play them. My daughter has had this game for two years and she continues to play it. It has re-enforced the math skills she has learned in school.
If my memory serves me right I purchased this at Target for about $13.00. I'm very happy that I did. I'm not always impressed with computer games. Some of the time they are very short lived. This seems to have grown with my daughter and I'm sure when my son gets old enough he too will play it.(My son is only 3)
