"we got our 2007 Element for $250 below invoice in December, 2007"

Please let me know how to fast-forward to Dec 2007. At that point I'll have one year less of school to complete. :)

Nice review.

For the rentals, I find that it helps to live near a major airport with a lot of onsight and nearby rental companies. Then you can just call them and see who has the type of car that you are seeking. It's harder to do it you are in a rural or far-out suburban area.

There's some real good advice here. I'd also recommend not relying solely on internet sources for your information. I scour the web sites for pricing and incentive info, but also check the Saturday morning paper for car ads from dealers that I might not have been considering, and sometimes find out about newly released incentives that haven't percolated out to the web yet (this is especially true the first few days of a month because many incentive deals expire at the end of a month and are modified or replaced with new incentives on the 1st of the new month).

Also, how do you go about renting your candidate cars? I find it kind of tricky since a lot of the rental places won't guarantee you any specific make or model (they always have that disclaimer "or similar" in their ads). Some popular cars are hard to find on rental lots (I rarely see Hondas as rental cars, though they're great cars to own).

See ya!
