Old Man Metal's Top Progressive/Metal albums of 2006

Maybe I missed something. I thought 2006 was a lousy year for Progressive and Metal music. In 2005 I touted twenty-five albums. This year I could only fine twelve.

Hey Brian,

Always good to hear from you.

While I used to spend more time beating the bushes for music I like, it has taken second fiddle to writing lately. Much of what you suggested is fresh to me. I have Come Clarity but didn't like as much as Soundtrack to your Escape or Colony. I saw where Steve (punkrawka), not to mention Paul Lorentz likes it too. I'd better give it another spin.

Iron Maiden is a Christian band now? Wonders never cease. What's Eddie? The thirteenth disciple? I meant to check this out but haven't got around to it. I've got Remagine and though it's better than Invisible circles it's nothing to get excited about. They really miss Mark Jansen.

I've got Agolloch's older releases, Mantle, She Painted Fire Across the sky and while there's no denying their talent, like the similar band Opeth, I can't seem to get into them. Ditto Amorphis and Mars Volta.

Moonlight? Are talking about the prolific Polish band Moonlight? Their music is pretty good. I'll have to check it out as well as the other bands you mentioned that I hadn't heard of.

Have a Happy and Properous New Year.

Regards, Duane

Hi, Duane! So, i listen to a lot less metal than you do, but we seem to have similar tastes in it - the Muse album is terrific, btw - and i'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the metal you heard this year. I'm not the best person to make suggestions, but first of all, i really did like In Flames' Come Clarity and Iron Maiden's a Matter of Life and Death (one of their best, most progressive albums ever, even if i'm a little weirded out by their being Christian rockers now).

There's also a bunch of prog/metal albums i haven't gotten around to yet, but are reputed to be excellent and the sorts of things we like: After Forever's Remagine. Agalloch's Ashes against the Grain (this one is _very_ well-regarded and i'll buy it in January). Amorphis's Eclipse. Deluge Grander's August in the Urals (i'll also buy this in January). Enslaved's Ruur. Mars Volta's Amputecture (shilmafone's a huge fan of this one). Moonlight's DownWords. Nachtmystium's Instinct: Decay.

Perhaps you already own a few of these; still, it seems a shame not to plunge eagerly into the rest, ready to find someone to love. :)

cheers,
- Brian
