by t13monkeys | Dec 24 '06
Wait a year on the PS3 to see how things pan out. If game developers keep leaving Sony, then it might just be worth it to get a 360...

I'm beginning to think that the only reason Sony succeeded for 10 years is just simply being in the right place at the right time.

It is as if the marketing went ahead of the product, and Sony went ahead and promised a machine that would revolutionize entertainment, movies and everything, but the only real noticeable adjustment to many of us was the adaptation of 1080p which while significant is outside what a majority of TV owners have which is 1080i.

Ultimately it may have been Sony's downfall to have released a console a year too early, and then failing to live up to a lot of expectations in quality assurance, sheer numbers, as well as games that actually impressed people.

There's still a shot, Sony can fix things in the future as it's next-gen game releases begin to come out which "impress people" but whether or not that will save the console is a matter of time.

Starting around 1980 I formerly owned literally every "programmable" home system then popular (or even not-so-popular), including: Atari pong/2600/5200/7800; Odyssey2; Bally/Astrocade; Matell Intellivision ("I" & II)/Aquarius; TI99/4A; Commodore Vic/64/128; Adventure Vision; Vectrex; Emerson Arcadia 2001; Colecovision/Adam; Nintendo "I" & "II" etc.; and Sega Master/Game Gear/Genesis/Nomad. Not to mention Tandy Color Computer, Apple IIe, IBM, and subsequent game-compatible computer systems. By the 1990s I was feeling a bit "old" to continue keeping up with the continual evolution of videogaming, and I more or less left videogaming to the younger generation of fans (I'm now age 53).

What I've been leading up to is that it continues to fascinate me how every decade (or even every few years) the erstwhile "king of the hill" (e.g., Sony in recent years) is summarily knocked off its throne—often for utterly unforeseeable reasons.

Seems like no player can maintain its industry dominance longer than about a decade before making some incomprehensible marketing and/or design decisions and thusly shooting itself in the proverbial foot.

Your review did an admirable job in explaining yet another example of that sort of thing, and I enjoyed being educated by it (having been essentially "out" of videogaming for several years now). Thanks for sharing your considerable knowledge so that this "old timer" could be somewhat brought up to speed re the latest news/trends in his erstwhile hobby!

Well I meant PS2 actually because my opinion is about how they were the beloved makers of the PS2 and how they screwed themselves royally with the PS3, but it's true my title is too ambiguous about what this review is on so I'll see if I can change that.

Didn't you mean to say PS3 instead of PS2 in the title of this review?

I have ticked off everybody on the Sony boards saying that Sony has to prove there worth 600 dollers and there not doing it, and i have ticked everybody on the nintendo boards saying nintendo hasen't proven Wii can win yet intill we see next years game schedule and what devopers do with the controller in the future.

The thing that I disagree with you is Sony loosing money on the console, most game companies loose money on there console and make it back in software sales, everybody but Nintendo does this they make an 80 doller profit for each Wii sold. The idea is to get the console out for less money so consumers buy it and buy more software. But with the blueray they had to charge a lot for it, and as for the blueray I think it's a variable but mostly a negative one on that. Lets say Sony does win the format war outright and people jump to blueray wihtout giving HD-DVD a chance the process of upgrading will take 2 to 3 years at the very least and by that time half of the PS3 lifespan will be over.

The thing that I agree will hurt Sony the most is 3rd party companies leaving it exclusivless the only reason the PS2 won despite it's long load time, buggy hardware, and being graphically less powerful was it's exclusives. If I can play the same games on a 200 doller chaper 360 I'll get a 360.

You should have also added Sony arrogance to the list. Who can forget these great lines from Sony execs over the summer, If people want the PS3 they will have to work a little harder, PS3 is the 4th dimension, The PS3 is to cheap, If the price for games is over 60 dollers don't ding me. They sound more arrogant then Nintendo was before releasing the N64
