The Bottom Line 1. STIHL 2. Echo 3. Husqvarnia 4. Paulan

Responding to an inquiry regarding gas chainsaws.

Hey,

Sorry to bother you, but I seem to recall that you used to work in forrestry, though your current profile doesn't mention it.

I was wondering if you knew anything about gas-powered chainsaws. After our recent storm and having a ton of branches to deal with and no electricity (for our electric-powered chainsaw), my husband has decided that we should get a gas-powered one, but I haven't found much information on them. (If you have a review, give me the link and I'll go and look at it).

I know Husqvarnas are popular, but I heard that the quality has gone way down. I've heard good things about Echo, so I'm leaning that way.

Hello Joy,

The chainsaws are difficult to find but they are in the home & garden area under power mowers and tools. If you want to research the Epinions database for reviews on several small chainsaws I’ll post a link at the bottom. I have used all of the popular brands of chainsaws over the years as a timber faller and working in the tree trimming, removal businesses. For commercial, quality and lifetime use the STIHL chainsaws are unquestionably the best chainsaws on the market. These chainsaws have plenty of power and do not bog down in larger logs or limbs. The STIHL chainsaws are also built at a much higher quality than their competitors. Their saws are made of aluminum, while others such as Paulan, Homelite and Craftsman have plastic housings and parts.

The better chainsaws have metal parts and housings. They also last many years longer than the high impact plastic brands. Like the housings the motors are generally better as well. Again it’s my belief that the STIHL brand makes the best motors. STIHL also makes a very good chain, chain oil, bars, files , hard hat, chaps and 2 cycle oil for theirs and other chainsaws (I would also recommend Oregon bars and chains). It also comes with a large bar nut that does not fail or strip. Lastly the chain tension is easy to a just in or out. This is all done with the bar tool. The bar tool is a socket on one end and a flathead screw driver on the other end. This tool is used to tighten or loosen the chain. It can also take off the bar nuts to replace the chain or bar. It’s also used to tighten and loosen gas and oil caps and change the spark plugg. In addition most STIHL saws have a compression release which makes it easier to start.

However not everyone can justify spending that kind of money for a commercial heavy duty chainsaw. There are plenty of other good chainsaws on the market. Husqvarnas and Echo both make good chainsaws. I would recommend the Echo over the Husqvarnia myself. I have had better results with Echo chainsaws over time. They are built well and the motors last for years. If I had to get a very cheap model I would go with the Paulan brand. So I would recommend these chainsaws in this order;

1. STIHL
2. Echo
3. Husqvarnia
4. Paulan

Safety
Always wear chaps, hearing protection and eye protection when running a chainsaw. Wearing Steel toe boots are also a good practice while running a saw.

I hope this has answered your questions. If you have any other questions about chainsaws feel free to drop me an email anytime.
