As a government site, the IRS is ok. Let’s face it, you don’t surf over to the IRS to read the comics, or hope to win a million dollars. You usually click on the IRS filled with dread, hoping to find semi-useful tax advice, or at least someone with a sharp stick reaching out from the monitor to poke at your buttocks.
In all seriousness, the IRS is a one-stop tax shopping resource. The website takes the form of a daily newsletter, suffused with cheery humor, and they always seem to remind people that the tax filing deadline is quickly approaching, even if it is 224 days until filing! You will find tax information, statistics and demographics, and plenty of tax forms. Any federal tax form you need, even the most arcane ones, you will find at IRS.gov. The website is easy to navigate, and because the site is easy to use, is a vote of confidence for the IRS.
Recently, in light of criticism that the IRS was unfriendly and monolithic, they made attempts to be friendlier and responsive to people regarding tax questions. This had the effect of making thugs that annually take your money, less gruesome to bear, I wasn’t buying it; well, ok, they ARE trying and I give them kudos for effectiveness. One time, I called regarding a tax question, the harried accountant manning the phone seemed stumped by my question, something about roth ira's; but after a quick conference with his supervisor, he answered my question. Of course, the hesitation only left doubt in my mind, so I had to double check and seek other sources for the information.
