The bath is one of my major cleaning pet peeves. Kneeling on hard tile, reaching over and into cleaning solution to scrub walls, feeling like a chemical dump afterwards. I had to try out the Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner.
Purchase and Install:
I picked the unit up for $19.99 at Target which included the unit, 4 batteries, the hanger and 1 bottle of cleaning solution. Assembly is quite easy and consists of installing batteries, shower hanger and the solution bottle then hanging over your shower head rod. Just a word of caution - if you have a handheld sprayer it may not work or may be more difficult to work with vs a fixed showerhead.
Use:
Close the shower curtain and push the button. The hardest part of using this was getting my other half to actually remember to push the button. This gives you 15 seconds to get the shower closed up, then it sprays for about 15 or so. The solution has a very nice fragrance that fills the bathroom after use.
Results:
We don't have a problem with soap scum or mildew, however in Jacksonville we do have extremely hard water which leaves behind a film on just about anything and everything it can. Just boiling water in a Calphalon pot once will leave a white film over every surface the water touches.
Using the automatic shower cleaner on a daily basis has cut down the amount of manual cleaning required from every 2 weeks to about 5-6 weeks between cleanings. Well worth the cost of the unit solution batteries.
One side perk is what we thought were permanently water stained/damaged chrome fixtures have been continuously getting brighter and brighter.
Cost of use:
The original batteries lasted ~6 weeks, the cleaning solutions last ~2.5-3 weeks and cost about $2.50-3.00 a bottle. It does work out to be a bit more expensive than the 2 cans of knockoff scrubbing bubbles I would normally go through - but just the fact of not having to clean a garden tub bi-weekly is WELL WORTH IT!
The bad:
We have very large garden tubs - the unit just barely touches the farthest wall and misses a large chunk of where the far wall meets the back wall.
Hangs a bit too low so there are large chunks of the upper tile it does not hit. Not a huge problem in my case as they do not see the water contact the rest of the tub gets.
Overall:
Well worth it in my case. It really helps combat the hard water attack which is unavoidable (water softener is not an option in an apartment) and keeps me from being uncomfortably stooped over a tub every other week.
