The Bottom Line Amazing Games That Can Now Be Played For Free and Are Still As Good as They Were Ten Years Ago
I grew up playing Genesis. It was the system that I had and loved. I played many games, from the worst to the best. These are just some of the amazing games that I have played and I highly recommend even now for the Genesis. Although many people consider the Genesis a system without many good RPG games, I found most of them to be interesting and innovative. Although there were not quite as many compared to SNES, the ones that were out were a very enthralling and entertaining experience. Shadowrun - RPG that started it all. This game was the predecessor to movies such as Johny Mnemonic and the Matrix. Mages, Cyberdecks, Elf Magic, Dragons, and many other creatures lurk throughout the atmosphere of the game. You choose your own path, and earn your money as you please. You can run against the evil corporations, or rob random people on the street. Join a gang or be your own man. As you progress throughout the game, you can modify yourself, your deck, and even your characters negotiating skills and reputation. This is a very original game with many side tasks and an interesting story, for its time. Shining Force - Another great RPG from the Genesis. This is a strategy RPG where you have individual characters with their own unique abilities. It was one of the first to combine strategy with RPG elements, and it succeeded in its attempt. You gather a band of young soldiers and mages and fight the evil dragon that is being awakened. The game has a solid storyline, but really stands out in the strategy department. One of the better features is the fact that even when you lose a battle, all you have to do is spend money to revive everyone, making the game much less frustrating than many comparable titles which would require you to start the game over. Landstalker - Amazing game that went under the radar of most people. It is one of the first "3-D games. The 3-D is in quotes for a reason. The game is not what we think of is 3-D by todays standards. But still has three ways to go and even manages to make the lack of certain aspects like being able to see behind a wall fun by at times hiding little Easter eggs in such areas. Its almost as if the programmers realized the downside of their engine and managed to incorporate it into the game. It is comparable to Zelda in some ways, but yet very different. You are a bounty hunter that is going after a legendary treasure, but of course, as most stories goes, you become tangled up in something much more important. Aladdin - A great screen to game release, especially for its time. At the time, very few games made from movies were even playable, but Aladdin managed to completely exceed expectations. This is a side-scroller where Aladdin travels on foot and carpet to save the princess, Jasmine. The game is almost completely based on the cartoon of the same name, so there is not much to the story. The graphics were amazing, the gameplay almost flawless, and the music was straight from the animated movie, and surprisingly sounded good. Phantasy Star IV This game is yet another classic RPG. You are a understudy monster hunter, and you get called on a routine task which turns into a world-saving adventure. The story in this game is amazing, the graphics are stunning for the time, and the amount of different tasks and side tasks that the game opens up is just beyond comparison to anything at the time. The game drew me in and did not let me go until I was at the finish line a week later. However, I had to spend many more hours replaying it again just to try to get some of the dozens of the side missions that the game offers. Streets of Rage 2 Amazing fighting game only for the Genesis. The graphics were top notch, the four fighters had different abilities and it showed, and each fighter even had their own special move. This is a scrollem beat them up, but it somehow engulfed you and made you want to play and play. You could clean up the streets beating bad guys with 1 or 2 players, and even fight each other if you got bored. The variety of different bosses made the game challenging and extremely fun to play. Even the chill techno music flowed well and set up the atmosphere of a great game. Comix Zone - A great action-adventure game with one of the most original concepts Ive seen not only on the Genesis, but overall. You are a comic book creator and you get stuck in your own comic, having to fight and think your way out. The games graphics are amazing, the controls are good, and the gameplay is varied and challenging. Flashback - Incredible game with an amazing storyline. The graphics on this one were nothing to brag about, but the story was where it was at. You traveled through eight different worlds, in a search for your past, trying to recover your memory. The game will take you through several alien worlds and a game show reminiscent of the Running Man. The game involves lots of puzzle solving, as you have to walk around and pick up different objects and use them throughout the game. One of my favorite parts of the game was the way you could distract the bad guys by throwing a rock and they would follow the noise, which allowed you to sneak up and attack them from the back. This is common place in games now, but it was the first time I have seen a game implement the concept. Earthworm Jim - A hilarious game with great graphics. You are an earthworm, fighting many goofy enemies with your blastergun. The game is mostly a shooting side-scroller, but at times there are variations such as riding a rocket or a bungee-jumping level. The controls were top-notch, good side-effects and overall just an original concept that was executed perfectly. Shinobi III - An addictive game with lots of challenges while you play. You are a ninja, and as any good ninja you have to kill plenty of bad guys, as well as do plenty of sneaking and jumping. The game had flawless controls, good graphics, and was extremely challenging. You get to ride a horse, climb up a cliff by jumping from wall to wall, and using your knife and shuriken (throwing stars) to take out the evildoers. This game set the standard for many games to come in its genre. These video games are not listed in any particular order. There are many great games that did not make this list, but thats what top ten lists are for. I hope that my little list will encourage the classic game enthusiasts to check out some of these games if you somehow managed to miss them the first time around. |
