Does and Do Not's Breaking in Gloves
Jan 23 '07
The Bottom Line Just stick to simple ways a glove will take 3 weeks no matter what you do!
There are many ways of breaking in a baseball glove, however many of them will just ruin the life of the glove.
Since being able to walk I have played baseball for 9 years and I'm 13 years old. You would expect that I would have gone through many gloves, however I have only gone through 4 gloves.
Things to do when breaking in a new glove...
Use shaving cream because it's cheap and it keeps the leather moist but it doesn't way down the glove. However most glove oils make the glove heavy.
Play catch daily with your glove, or just sit down and throw the ball into your glove.
I disagree with putting a ball in the glove and tying it up. By doing this you are recking the shape of your hand in the glove.
Go to a batting cage and catch the balls if no one can throw with you.
Use the glove in practice, however do not ever use a glove that isn't broken in.
Things not to do when breaking in a new glove...
DO NOT SUBMERGE THE GLOVE IN WATER! It is my biggest pet hate. People have been mixed up only PROFESIONALS do that because it recks the glove and it will only last 6 weeks max, and once it is recked professionals just get a new one from there sponsors.
DO NOT use heaps of glove oil or shaving cream a small layer will do fine. Apply it 2 times during the season and Once after the season before you put it away for winter.
DO NOT ever run over the glove with your car, or put the glove in the micro wave. DOING THIS WILL RUIN YOUR GLOVE.
DO NOT pound the glove with a bat in the pocket this will wreck the pocket.
