The movies I saw in Jan. (NOT a 10-best list and the last one)
by Stephen_Murray | Feb 01 '07
"Proof," "Streamers," "Pushover," & "Crank" vanished without receiving their due; I thought that there was more of value in "Igby_Goes_Down" and the "All_the King's_Men" remake than was reported

They are too much work and once the habit is broken...life is easier.

Wonder if the new manager could help us get a general movies category. I've seen Late Marriage and agree with your rating. United 93 too. I did like Three Burials exactly for its strangeness and Rent too, but only with a second viewing. First time I hated it too. Strange, I guess!

Yup and thanks. Ritter was generally enjoyable. I think that her best performance of all was as the police informant/tie seller in "Pickup on South Street."

Thelma Ritter was one of the best character actresses ever to work in films. Her six supporting nominations with no wins is another footnote in the legacy of poor judgement the Academy has hung upon itself over the years.

There is word of some progress in the wacky world of the database. Unfortunately, that word is "slow". I hope the real change occurs that will allow you to continue this great tradition.

Having played the original cast recording (and the cast was largely unchanged for the movie) did not encourage me to see "Rent," though I have one generally sane friend (a 55-year-old black female) who adores the music and say the play on Broadway multiple times.

I for one will miss these write-ups, because they show me the mind and habits of a very omnivorous viewer (with excellent taste). Your preamble strikes home, because I'm another who has long wished for a general movies category; it is ridiculous not to have one after all this time. I hope if/when they do supply the category, you'll continue this excellent diary.

Re: the songs of Rent... I was in a Tower Records long ago and heard the most banal, awful caterwauling to instantly forgettable music, and wondered, What on earth is that? When the clerk said it is the soundtrack to Rent, I made a mental note to avoid it for the rest of my days. So far, so good.
