Re: female composers! (Reply to this comment)

Ya' might have heard of her as the French woman for whom the novelist Ivan Turgenev abandonned Mother Russia for, bro. ;o)
Supposedly, she went and sang in an opera in Russia and Turgenev was smitten on the spot. He jumped up and down yelling 'brava' so much that she had him brought in to see her off-stage. Next thing you know, he moved to Paris and stayed with her and her husband... Something of a weird trio. I think the Russians didn't like that very much, so Bulgakov has her as one of the tormented demons who come to the Devil's Ball in his famous novel, 'Master and Margarita'. O, well....
I hadn't heard of Boulanger before, or Ruth C Seeger either. Way cool! I think Carole King tried her hand at composing an opera once, but I've never heard how it came out. Anyhow! It's cool to learn of a few more female composers. Thanks a bunch! :o)

Garcia-Viardot sounds familiar for some reason (hopefully beyond the fact that she is a famous singer).
A lot of the famous composers of the twentieth century (Boulez etc.) studied with Nadia Boulanger--I've never actually heard anything from the woman herself, but she obviously knew what she was doing.
Incidentally, Ruth Crawford Seeger (Mike & Peggy's mom and Pete's stepmom) was a composer of some note around the Depression years. I thought that musical connection was kind of neat :)

female composers! (Reply to this comment)

There doesn't seem to be many very famous ones around indeed! Looks like you've got all the famous names already (and still have fingers left to count!).
I wonder if Rachel Portman counts? I think she does mostly movie music, but she also has 1 opera to her name, the kid-friendly The Little Prince. There's a really cool DVD of it and the sung English is actually understandable!
I think those singing sisters Maria Malibran (soprano) and Pauline Viardot-Garcia (contralto) were composers as well. I haven't heard the music of either yet (well... actually a very tiny bit by Viardot, since she wrote the ending virtuoso cadenza for that Act I ending aria in the Berlioz version of Gluck's Orphee et Eurydice). I think Cecilia Bartoli is looking to release a CD full of songs by Malibran, though. That should be an interesting listening. :o)

Nice List (Reply to this comment)
by jacobeiserman
I believe that Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel was also a composer of some note, though overshadowed by her brother. And if you want to go WAAAY back, Hildegard von Bingen is actually the earliest female composer of whom a good deal is known (12th century composer of a lot of monodic Gregorian chant).
Regarding your comment on my own entry to this writeoff--have you had a chance to listen to that Arvo Part CD yet? I'd love to know what you think.

Actually I did list several female performers here:
Kiri Te Kanawa -- soprano of magnificient range
Cheryl Studer -- another wonderful coloratura soprano
Martha Argerich -- pianist of terrific style and control
The sad part is, that there are very very few female composers out there -- the only one that comes to mind is the wife of Robert Schumann, Clara, who was noted for her performance and composing talent for solo piano. Sadly, I haven't heard enough of her work to really give an impression, but I will someday. Thanks for the heads up. -- Telynor

I'd hoped you at least would have one female artist included. I'm sure these are wonderful artists, but where are the great female musicians? I'll find out!

I've actually heard... (Reply to this comment)

... a few on your list, but there are some that will have to go on my "to listen to" list!
The only Josef Strauss music that I remember hearing was played in the streets by a local band while on holiday in Austria, and they all seemed to be marches - which had given me completely the wrong idea about his music!! Thanks for correcting that. Oh, and thanks for joining in! :-D
