Re: no female musicians/composers? (Reply to this comment)

Jessye Norman is a lot of woman. Her name occurs twice, the names Gundula Janowitz or Margaret Price also appear, parity for the male violinists. (Gertrude Stein also is mentioned).
Maybe you should read more carefully before complaining?

no female musicians/composers? (Reply to this comment)
by jankp
I haven't seen one female included in this write-off and they may all be dead or old now. I'll have to come up with a list of younger female and male artists!

A Classic Review. (Reply to this comment)

Classical favorites from a classic mind.
My own selections would reveal such a low brow romantic.
I have no-o-o-where to go but . . . .

Vissi de arte... (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, in Music
In second grade, I was one of the ten best pianists of that age in the state (there was not internal ranking of the top ten) and got to play and be interviewed on a radio station in the nearest town with a radio station. I peaked way too early!
And in "Il Barbieri," my favorite is the calumny aria (and in "Guillaume Tell," the finale--the part most distant from the famed overture, not that I dislike that.)

"unfortunately, I had a promising future already behind me in third grade" - easily best quoet of the WO so far! :-D
Some compositions here that I like (never thoguht of Rossini's "Barber of Seville" when I was compiling mine but I should have done), some I'm not familiar with, a coulpe I've never even heard of.
Thanks for the entry!

You are so very right about Heifetz. (Reply to this comment)

His style and control are so beautiful, it can bring me to tears in the right mood. Thank god there are recordings of his performances! Great, great list. -- Telynor

Re: What Up...? (Reply to this comment)

Another guilty pleasure is the Rienzi Overture, and before discovering this writeoff this morning, I was thinking of listening to "Parsifal" today, but I'm not a Wagnerian. (And I decided to listen to the Nagaon Varese disc instead...)
What IS missing is Berlioz. His Requiem (conducted by Eugene Ormandy with Philadelphia forces) is what opened me to romantic music at the end of my highschool daze. And I'll take "Les Troyens" over the Ring, 8 days a week.
