Nice review and excellent analysis.

As for other Beatles remakes, a couple I really like are:

Here, There and Everywhere by Jose Feliciano. It's on the same album that Light My Fire is on. This is an instrumental version of HT&E and it's gorgeous. Great makeout music. Feliciano also did Let It Be on another album but it wasn't as good as the original.

In My Life by Bette Midler, from the movie For the Boys, I think. Slow, beautiful and plaintive, and it fits the scene in the film very well. (Midler's character is on a USO tour entertaining troops in Vietnam.)

Those are the only two that I really like that you haven't already mentioned. The Carpenters did a few Beatles songs (Ticket to Ride comes to mind) and also did a remake of Please Mr. Postman, which the Beatles also re-made. In both cases, the Beatles' version is superior.

Anyway, nice review!

...what you mean here.:

"..."I can’t do anything wrong” Elton.
I miss him. "

I miss him, too. *sniffles* *sighs*

The other re-makes sound cool, too. I'll have to check this album out! :)

What a great job you did on this review!

Some Are (The Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye and Joe Cocker Covers) Some aren't (most of the I Am Sam Covers) but all are enjoyable and I stand by my picks.

trusting the man who alerted me to Snark I will seek out these covers... reluctantly. See how it goes. Sounds rather. I hope they are far removed from the original. Coz if they ain't, why bother?

Thanks Mike.

Bob,
you know, I'm wondering if this is the version that's been niggling the back of my brain for the last few days. I knew there was one I liked but couldn't remember who did it.

I'll look it up.

p.s. I've heard of the other "Come Together" album but have held off listening to it on C&W principal. Given my argument that the Beatles work really well in a BlueGrass setting, this principal now goes out the window. I'll give it a listen, thanks.

In My Life, a C/W duet featuring Susan Ashton and Gary Chapman, and quite a bit slower than the original. I love the way the piano solo in the middle works in this version, it's so laid back and expressive. You can find it on the album Come Together: America Salutes The Beatles

oh yes. I agree with you on that note. That song played on the radio before my grandma Lucy died. I know it has nothing to do with death, but how odd for her to die after such a song. Anyways thats my weird family death story.

My family tends to speak to us on the radio after or before they pass. Strange I know.. maybe Im sounding crazy to some of you, so Im leaving now. Hey dont judge me!!!!!! lol j/k :)
bye now.

Pinn,

submarine is most definitely yellow. I don't own any albums any more. Got rid of them years ago when disks came out... I'm a tortured soul.

I have Help, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Peppers, Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine, White Album, Abbey Road, Let it Be, 62-66 and 67-70. I want to get Let it be naked, the huge anthology and the last one everybody's talking about...

When I was a young kid, my favorite Beatle was Paul. From 13 to 30 it was John (he died when I was 13), the last 9 years have given me a great appreciation for George and made me realize he was probably the most talented. Not sure if I'll ever say Ringo is my fave.

Shatner's version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" has to be the best Beatles cover ever performed by a member of the cast of Star Trek against the advice and good judgement of Agent, Manager, family and his own "inner voice".

Such capacity for hilarity is bestowed by only a chosen few...

JiggyJay,

Damn man.... I forgot about Elliot Smith's version of Because. It definitely makes the list. It's outstanding.

I'm going to have to go back and re-write.

Angela,
Some of these I'm going to have to track down. The Fiona Apple version is great and it was a tough choice between her and Rufus (I felt I could only pick one) but in the end Rufus had to win.
The Siouxsie & The Banshee's tune is of particular interest.

U2... well, I'm hesitant. A lot of people think that their version of Helter Skelter is excellent and I thought it was just average.

p.s. Ben Harper can do no wrong

Flash Hammer.

Oasis' version of I Am The Walrus was "ok". nothing special. The Orchestration was good but I thought the vocals were flat through most of it. Frank Zappa's version was better despite the fact that he screwed up the words.

I've heard some pretty awesome covers, in fact I know of a superb cover band known as the Fab Faux who consistently do them justice. But, when I heard the Beatle's voices and instrumentation (albiet rearranged somewhat) on the new Love album, I realize just how unique and timeless they and the body of their work truly are.

They are to me a once in a lifetime phenomenon.

The ones I do know are excellent picks indeed. Am curious to hear the ones that aren't familiar to me.

Few other Beatles covers I could think of:

-U2's version of "Happiness (Is A Warm Gun)". It's radically different from the original, but it's kinda cool.
-Fiona Apple's version of "Across The Universe"
-Oingo Boingo's version of "I Am The Walrus"
-Siouxsie & the Banshees' version of "Dear Prudence"

Also, you mentioned Ben Harper, have you ever heard his version of "Michelle"? I REALLY like what he did with that song.

A few more to check out-if you do, hope you like these picks as well!

Interesting read; I was wondering if you had ever heard Elliott Smith's version of 'Because'--that's a very beautiful Beatle cover and one of the only ones I can digest.

ooooh... Mr. Pinn

I have about 130 original Beatles tunes sitting on my computer... album by album... a great love.

Maybe that's why I'm so particular about the re-makes.

I fairly enjoy the Damned's cover of Help!, which is odd seeing as I don't particularly like the original, yet it doesn't seem all that different.

Interesting list though. What's your take on Oasis' 'I Am The Walrus'?

Thanks man....
1) Imagine isn't technically a Beatles Tune so I have to discount it on principle but I'll look in to the other ones. I've vaguely heard of The Smitherines re-makes but haven't listened to them yet.

Here's 4 to consider:
Ofray Harnoy: "Imagine" (The Beatles for cello)
Various artists: "Come Together: Guitar Tribute to the Beatles, Vol. 2" (Guitarists (Michael Hedges, Robben Ford, etc.) take on the Beatles)
Jason Falkner: "Bedtime with the Beatles" (Beatles as Lullabys and it works.)
The Smithereens: "Meet the Smithereens" (A total remake of 1st album the Jersey way)
cheers
