Privet Arashi!
Haha! Yup, those two are for nights when you are trying to beat Morpheus into submission rather than giving in to him. :o)

Very glad that you enjoyed the essay! One of these days I'll get around to fixing up my older ones (from the days before I learned to use HTML code or the spell-checker). But usually I'm too busy being mesmerized by a few divas singing from the stereo. It's a conspiracy, I tell ya!

Thanks a bunch for another friendly comment, matie!
Cheers,
Smorgy :o)

I confess I'm also prone to listening 'Deh, per questo istante solo' from VK's 'Mozart Arias' CD before going to sleep. A day lacks something if I haven't listened to this thing at least for 3 times! ;) But "Johohoe!" and "Stolto, a un sol mio grido" for sure wouldn't make a sleeping pill for me. Quite the contrary! :)

Thanks for another cool piece of reading, matie!

Hey Vasilis!
Thanks, mate! I'm feelin' pretty well paid that you guys are continuing to read these classical music reviews, actually. :o)

Old Smorg likes to sit back and to fantasize that reading my random ramblings on various opera recordings would cause 1 person per month to buy a ticket to a classical music performance or a classical recording that he wouldn't have been interested to obtain otherwise.... Then I'll be sitting there with a stupid smile on my face while my cat watches irritably nearby wondering if I had became too forgetful with age to remember that feeding time is at precisely 18:00h and not 18:00:01h...

Thanks for stopping by, Vasilis! It's always wonderful hearing from ya', my friend. Hope the weekend is going well your way!

Cheers,
Smorg :o)

Oh yes, I was absolutely floored when Fleming belted out the letter song. It was quite a performance, and I would have loved to have seen it. One day, I keep telling myself, I will get to go to an opera at the Met, one of my goals in life. -- Telynor

Oooh. Wasn't that some 'Eugene Onegin'? Wow! I'm quite bowled over by Fleming, Hvorostovsky, and Vargas. What a cast!

The Iron-@ss competition... a very apt dubbing of that long-winded series indeed! I like Wagner's 'T&I', too... and 'Lohengrin', too. And 'Hollaender' if there is a great Senta in the cast.

Hope your weekend is full of great music. Thanks a bunch for stopping by!

Cheers,

Smorg quoth: You're absolutely right about Bruennhilde's Immolation Scene, too. I only listen to it off the compilation disc nowadays... but gonna watch the Boulez Cycle's 'Siegfried' and 'Gotterdaemmerung' tomorrow. Will need a lot of mocha flappuccino to go with those! ;o)

Taking in a live broadcast of Eugen Onegin from the Met today. On the whole Ring bit -- I've always felt that it was the Iron-@ss Competition of Opera, myself. I like listening to bits of Wagner, but an entire opera of his is simply too much for me to get through without keeling over in either boredom or pain. I do like some of Tristan und Isolde... -- Telynor

Hey Willy & R! (Reply to this comment)

Telynor: The first time I heard Verdi's Nabucco and it got to Va Peniseiro I was floored. There's a really sumptuous version of it out there on DVD with Sameul Ramey as the High Priest, and fantastic production values. Every now and then PBS will have it on the telly, and it's worth the effort.
It is a heck of a chorus indeed! :o)
I don't really care much for the rest of the opera (Verdi's 1st, I think), but that chorus is a true masterpiece. I always look forward to seeing clips of this thing from different performances on 'Classic Arts Showcase' at night (they really like to show it.. and Mussorgsky's Old Castle from Pictures at an Exhibition.. I must have seen at least 5 different takes on each on that program in the last 2 years!)

Will: Now that's a list! Or is it a Lyst?
Gasp! Ya've betta not make fun of old Liszt's name, mate. His granddaughter (and Wagner's granddaughter all in one) Nike wouldn't like it and I heard she has quite a temper. ;o)

Thanks for dropping by, mates! Hope your weekend is looking rosy.

Stephen: You have outdone yourself in eccentricity--only as goign-to-sleep music. "Tristan and Isolde" (mentioned in another listing with a later composer) is my notion of soporific (though Brunhilde's immolation music is too beautiful for anyone still awake at that point...)
:oD I know, bro! I can't seem to make up my mind music-wise, so I like everything. ;o)

Thanks again for catching that T&I composer, too. Wouldn't want to incur the wrath of Nike Wagner for attributing her granddad's masterpiece to Strauss instead... I heard she's been in a bad mood lately. ;o)

You're absolutely right about Bruennhilde's Immolation Scene, too. I only listen to it off the compilation disc nowadays... but gonna watch the Boulez Cycle's 'Siegfried' and 'Gotterdaemmerung' tomorrow. Will need a lot of mocha flappuccino to go with those! ;o)

Capt.D: Fantastic list! Well... I'm not really sure how many of these I've actually heard, but they sound great!! Thanks again for the entry!
Thanks, Capt! And for the cool concept for a write off, too. I picked up a lot of these pieces watching this free cable program called 'Classic Arts Showcase' at night, actually. They run a string of performing arts clips for a week at a time (changing every Friday night).. Some awesome old classic film clips, too.

Mike: Just come to Kansas: nothin' here but the sound of one hand clapping. ;-)
You Kansas folks clap so loudly with just one hand I can hear it all the way here in Diego! ;o)

I still miss the sound of silence in that part of the cornfield, actually. :o) And getting to see the stars at night, too! Here when it isn't too lighted out at night, it's too foggy.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, guys! Hope the sample clips came out ok on your stereo. Have a great weekend!

Cheers,
Smorg :o)
