How To Choose Socks Like A PRO

Mar 05 '07 (Updated May 04 '08)

The Bottom Line Read the review and make an informed decision.

Well, first off what type of event will you be doing under what climate conditions. There is sports socks, hunting/hiking socks, work socks, and business socks.

Sports socks you want to get well padded socks on the entire underside of the socks to play/run hard and keep your feet from throbbing when the game/running/jogging is over. Adidas makes quality socks which meets the criteria quite well.

Hunting/hiking socks you should pick out by what weather and how long are you going to engaged in that particular event. For example if you were going to be out in very cold weather you would want to wear Super Heavy Weight Merino Wool socks to protect your feet and especially your toes from jackfrost/frostbite because it helps maintain body heat levels by retaining heat. In slightly better conditions it would be best to wear Heavy Weight Merino Wool socks for basically the same reason. And for warmer conditions you should wear Light Weight Hunting socks which are almost the same just thinner and not as bulky as the previously mentioned socks.

Work socks should be thickly padded all the way around because they take a lot of abuse that normal socks will wear out after wearing out in as little as three days (personal experience first hand that left me with some blisters from improper cushioning) and last as long as seven times. Two good brand names of socks to use for the hard working man/woman on his/her feet eight hours or more a day would be Dickies and Craftsman. Which both have a warranty of at least one year. Wearing socks such as these will minimize the chance of getting a major bruise if you drop something on your feet to relatively small bruise unless it is something heavy where steel toe is not protecting your foot.

Business socks are pretty easy to pick if your feet sweat a lot get what are called liner socks to wick away sweat rather than collect it one example of that is Coolmax® and Wigwam Gobi liner. If your feet do not sweat much wear cotton, acrylic, or Coolmax® what ever is too your liking.

Socks by length is another category of it self; socks come in no show, ankle, crew, calf, below the knee, and over the knee.

Hope you enjoyed the review.
