The Bottom Line my top ten favorite guitar players

To me, Rock'n'roll is all about guitars! I love most musical instruments, except perhaps bagpipes and the accordian, but my favorite is the Guitar! Growing up I've listened to hundreds of groups, seen over a hundred shows, and listened to thousands of albums. They aren't in any particular order. So... who stands out in my mind as my favorite guitar players?

Jimmy Page I grew up with Jimmy Page, he has long been one of my favorite guitar players, since Led Zeppelin was one of my first favorite groups. I got to see him perform live with his band The Firm with Paul Rogers (Bad Company) on vocals. Page's guitar solo was incredible. At first borrowing from the blues, and then taking influences from eastern rhythms and many styles in between, Pages guitar licks are always memorable. He is probably one of the most "sampled" guitar players as well. Check him out on Led Zeppelin How the West was Won or Page and Plant Unledded.

Best Known Guitars: Gibson Les Paul with sunburst finish. Gibson EDS 1275 "the double neck"

Steve Vai Perhaps Joe Satriani's most famous student, Vai is also one of my favorite guitar players. I first saw him live on David Lee Roths first solo tour. Vai's guitar was incredible. He performed the solo from Eruption and then just took it so much further. Vai also used to be the guitar player for Frank Zappa. A great concert to check out is Steve Vai - Live at the Astoria.

Guitar of Choice - Ibanez GEM

Joe Satriani The teacher, the master, Satch! His students have included Kirk Hammett of Metallica, and Steve Vai. You owe it to yourself to check out this highly technical guitar virtuoso solo or one of the G3 Tours!

Guitar of Choice - his very own Ibanez custom model!

David Gilmour Guitar player for Pink Floyd Gilmour has the ability to make just a few simple notes sound psychedelic and mysterious. Take the four simple notes from Shine on You Crazy Diamond for example. When Gilmour plays them, they just ring out with this amazing clarity that is instantly identifiable. I've been able to see David Gilmour live on his solo tour for About Face and with Pink Floyd on the Momentary Lapse of Reason Tour. In the studio or on tour, Gilmour is an amazing musician who approaches technical perfection in his presentations.

Favorite Guitars - Gilmour has used a variety of guitars including Fender Stratocasters, Telecasters, Esquire, and Gibson Les Pauls and several brands of acoustics. Nothing stands between David Gilmour and the amplifiers except perhaps Electro-Harmonix/Sovtek Big Muff Electro-Harmonix Electric Mistress MXR Dyna-Comp Demeter Compulator Chandler Tube Driver BK Butler Tube Driver Boss CS-2 Compression Sustainer Boss GE-7 EQ Pedal Boss MZ-2 Digital Metalizer Pro Co RAT Distortion Arbiter Fuzz Face MXR Phase 90 Uni-Vox Univibe Vox Wah-Wah pedal Dunlop Cry Baby Wah-wah pedal

Pete Cornish P-2 Pete Cornish G-2 Pete Cornish SS-3 Pete Cornish ST-2 Pete Cornish Line Driver Pete Cornish Linear Boost Pete Cornish Tape Echo Simulator (T.E.S) Boss CE-2 Chorus (list of effects courtesy of Wikipedia)

Pete Townshend One of my first favorite groups was The Who, Englands reputed maximum R&B band. I was amazed at the windmill guitar and the sheer energy of Townshends playing. Even last year I took my son to see The Who and at age 60, Townshend still rocks on the guitar. If you want to see this man's influence on today's music, rent The Who - Live at the Isle of Wight.

A Few of Pete's Guitars - Gibson Les Paul, Fender Stratocaster, Fender Telecaster, Schecter Guitars.

Stevie Ray Vaughn A blues guitar player extraordinaire, SRV had a distinct style. I never got to see him play live, he died tragically in a plane crash, but I do have a number of his concerts on DVD and quite a few of his albums with Double Trouble.

Guitar - The man had a custom Fender Stratocaster named after him!

Eric Clapton Well, Clapton is kind of a no - brainer on a list of great guitar players! From the Yardbirds and Cream, Derek & the Dominoes and dozens of solo albums, Clapton has long been acknowledged as an accomplished guitar player. From blues to rock, the man delivers! I have yet to see a Clapton concert that didn't fail to impress me. I got to see Clapton live twice, once way back in '83, and again as the guitar player for Roger Waters on his first solo tour after breaking up with Pink Floyd.

Favorite Guitar - The Fender Stratocaster

Neil Young Neil Young isn't really a great singer. He really isn't a great guitar player either. Why is he on my list? Pure emotion! Young gets out of his voice and guitar a range of emotions that many much more proficient players only dream of. There is something about the way Neil Young plays that makes you feel the story he is telling whether it be a sad tale told with a quiet acoustic solo or fiery love with a distortion filled electric guitar solo.

Guitar of choice - Young has many guitars, but the Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty stands out.

Eddie Van Halen Eddie was probably my first favorite guitar player, because back in High School, Van Halen was the first rock group that I liked. From the fiery fast paced solo of eruption to the power chord cover of The Kinks You Really Got Me, Van Halen rocks!

Guitar of Choice - Eddie put Kramer guitars on the map!

Jimi Hendrix How could you have a list of guitar players without Hendrix? He is at the top of my list, the first guitar player I heard (albeit 20 years late) that really opened me up to just what guitars could sound like. Of course back in the sixties, Hendrix was showing a lot of people just what kinds of crazy sounds a guitar could make. His right handed Fender Stratocaster played upside down and strung accordingly produced sounds that had not come out before. As a teenager, I had several LPs of Hendrix, even though he actually only had five studio albums. See for yourself how ahead of his time he was with Jimi Hendrix plays Woodstock, or Jimi Hendrix Wild Angel (at the Festival of Wight).

Guitar of Choice - Right handed Fender Stratocaster strung upside down and played left handed!

Honorable Mention

Kirk Hammett - Metallica Jackson V guitar
Rick Neilson - Cheap Trick custom made Hamers including the Rick Neilson guitar and the five neck
Angus Young - AC/DC - the Gibson SG

Nick - my son. He loves guitar and plays rock and metal. Guitars of Choice - Fender Stratocaster in deep purple satin Finish and Fender Parlour acoustic

Paul - our guitar teacher - guitar of choice, a custom built guitar with parts of many!

Those are my favorite guitar players
