Socks Buying Guide (For Men)
Apr 10 '07 (Updated Apr 12 '07)
The Bottom Line Real guidelines, not joke as most of topics here.
Okay, first i want to say there's way to much humor here in How "To Choose Socks", i know some may think its easy task, just go and buy ones that of your size and color you like that's all, although there are some people (including me) who don't know much about clothes and socks in particular, and i am not one who go and buy first thing he sees, i think i used to PC hardware reviews, now i trying to find best goods (that wont hit my budget) whatever this is microprocessor or socks. Also i found writing review is good thing to sorting your thoughts together.
Okay enough background, when you decide its time to go shopping for socks there are few things to consider
Size
Color
Material
Length
Features
Extra gear :)
(Theres no order its just random list)
The Size:
I heard some rumors that socks size does not match shoe size, i don't know although my size is 46 and range my socks stretch are 44-48 EUR, so there could be some mistake by 1 or 2 sizes, but i have no way of telling this.
Also i am not sure whatever size in CM's that was written on my socks 29-32 is this size of feet or what, because my feet is 28 cm and this socks still fit me fine.
So theres still little confusion, i suggest buying socks by shoe size not feet size.
Basically if your shoes size is on the edge of the range e.g. 44, before going for lot of socks just go buy few cheap socks of different sizes (40-43 and 44-48) then look which size fits you best. (Hope theres no difference between socks sizes of different manufacturers.)
Okay thats about all i wanned to tell about sizes.
Color:
I know some people will tend to follow fashion, but this is not my case, although i have to follow some standards of fashion just not to bring to foolish attention to me, when i walk the street (e.g. i would've wear 19's century clothes if i find it more practical than current one, but i don't want people to show finger at me).
Back to socks, i always wearing black socks, i prefer black because it looks cool and suits almost every clothes and situation i can think of.
Well its up to you of course you can wear white gray well even green or pink socks if you like.
Material:
There is not much natural materials for socks Wool, Cotton, Linen, Silk (they use it as secondary material sometimes),
Other materials used for socks are Synthetic, and i have no knowledge of them, except they could be pricey, especially ones that moves sweat outside of the socks and does not allow it to go back they called Liner Sock, i think they pretty useless for daily activity, unless your sportsman or go fishing/hunting etc. or unless your legs sweat to much, you be fine with normal socks.
There are also winter and summer socks, winter socks.
Lengths:
Also there are different lengths for socks:
hidden (probably even lover than ankle, invisible outside of shoes)
ankle (i would not wear first two even though they made for man as well)
crew
calf / below the knee
over the knee (i would consider this ones if your legs getting really cold, unless this is the case i see no other reason to wear so high socks.)
Crew and Calf are best socks length for man, i don't see any need to wear higher or lower socks than that.
Features:
Pattern and "sections" (don't know better word), well there is thing like socks may be plain and most cheap socks are, some contain logo (i prefer socks without logo or brand) and some have patterns, its usually children and women socks, so we not going to talk about them.
Now about "sections" some quality/pricey socks come with different sections they for example tight in one place and soft in another, may contain areas for leg to breath and elastic on the end to prevent slipping, i am not really informed of this stuff and more info can be found in this review.
There is one more concern its Blisters, yeah if you walk to much during day you should think about this as well, but it have to do with shoes as well not only socks, and you better
ask someone else because i know nothing about this subject.
Only thing i can advice is Toe Socks, i haven't tried walking hard with them, but i thinking you can avoid some blisters between your toes with this type of socks.
Okay more about Toe Socks, thats the socks that have slot for each finger like glove comparing to mitten, its kind of new and some may consider this childish, but i must say i bought pair (black of course) few day's ago and they pretty interesting to wear, especially if you sometimes using your legs to grab some stuff at home (i do), well give em a try you'll like em.
Additional Gear:
Now when it comes to socks many (including me) have this problem, socks always tend to slip off, tired of this when i was child my mom were always saying look your socks almost slept off, don't you want to pull them up?
She wont understand because she was women and they don't wear socks often, that its usual thing with socks, they always slip off, and i mean always whatever material they made of they will slip off after some time, and i really don't have all day to pull them up.
Okay, i told this because i finally found solution its the Socks Suspenders (for men of course), its usual thing in England for example, and i don't know why they are not very popular anywhere else, maybe because people try to follow stupid fashion, not whats really convenient. I would strongly suggest using this stuff, at least give it a try, its not expensive at all.
If you have no idea what i talking about look here

Dont start with pricey socks, first buy few cheap ones and look if they good, then go for something with more quality if you prefer.
That's pretty all I waned to say about socks, nice shopping to you.
