The Bottom Line Times they do a-change

when the confederates crossed
it to defeat the yanks
at chickamauga, it was
seen as a symbol of dixie
resistance

when president taft passed through,
he pleased the people greatly
by pointing out how symmetrical
and sturdy the structure
seemed to be

when the bootleggers
and the klan used
it as a platform from which
to hurl
their victims' bodies
into the water below,
it became a place
of ghoulish fascination

when several suicides occurred
on and around it,
the teenage population
came out every friday night
to look for ghosts

when the sheriff discovered
evidence of hoodoo activity
in its shadow,
it was shunned and the town had
a new one built

when the rapists and
killers from the
darker races made it unsafe
to
go anywhere near,
it was finally declared
a threat to public
safety and pulled to the ground
