The Secure Digital (SD) card format is an industry standard, being the successor to MMC (MultiMedia Card). It retains the same form factor, but has some added features features. The differences include : speed ( up to 4 times faster), durability (thicker casing, more resistant to electrostatic discharge), write-protection, copyright protection, and storage capacity. For consumers the major difference is price! SD cards are definitely more expensive than MMCs.
Some devices that use SD cards are Cassiopeia EM-500 PocketPC PDA, Palm m125 & m50x series PDAs, Siemens SL45 MP3 cellphone, Nokia Communicator 9xxx PDA-cum-cellphone, Nokia Music Player HDR-1, Panasonic NV-MX300EN, NV-MX7DEN, NV-DS38EN digital video cameras, Panasonic SD Audio Player SV-SD75, SV-SD05, and Panasonic SD-IC Recorder RR-XR320.
I received my Panasonic 16MB SD card with my Palm m505. The postage-stamp form factor is certainly great for mobility - you can easily toss a couple in your wallet.
The formatted size is 14.1 MB. The difference is due to how storage manufacturers define 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes as opposed to OS developers who define it as 1,048,576 bytes. So don't be disappointed if your SD capacity is smaller than advertised.
The card is plug and play. Once inserted, it's immediately recognised by my Palm. The additional space is great - I've immediately loaded it up with lots of ebooks and graphics. You can swap cards between devices e.g. take photo with the digital camera, put in the Palm and view the image immediately.
