nas is the most overhyped rapper (Reply to this comment)
by realtalk88
nas is good but he ain't that great as u imagine(at least in technical skill)the only reason u are heaping undeserved praises to him is because u are a fanatic and it is hard to see reason.biggie and jay(who u consider overhyped)are better by long shorts .if big and jay are overrated then calling nas overrated is an understatement.

Good sh!t for whoever wrote this. Some of my own:
1st verse of "Get Down"
Anything off "Undying Love" - thought that sh!t was so original
2nd verse of "Purple"
All of "Queens Get the Money"

Love this verse...dissin' memph bleek, I also think the line "Your hoe, your man, lieutenant, your boss get found" is what prompted Jay-Z to come out with "Takeover".
QB's Finest - Da Bridge 2001:
Yo blow faces, fo-fo blazes, no one's safe
This music mogul rollin wit a hundred soldiers
Gangstas we postal
Oh you didn't, wanna know whose life Was Written?
The life I'm livin
The ice the women
The kites that sendin to lifeless biddin
The streets to prison
I touch you then buck you
Heats be spittin
La-ser, AR fifteen doors come down
Jaws is broke, your whole crew is coffin bound
Your hoe, your man, lieutenant, your boss get found
This dough I got, I spend it and toss around
New York it's time we flip it, where you from?
Ladies, it's time we flip it, where you from?
Now tell me who was the true thugs in videos first?
Who had the projects behind us, who bit it the worst?
We from the largest project, yo the biggest on earth
Queensbridge know they history, left y'all cursed cuz
Silent Murder - It Was Written (Euro Version)
It's like silent murder, I hit blunts hard like Ray Mercer
the violent words of a prince in a palace of Persia.
The cognac blurs ya, plus the trees,
but whose the foul one to make his nose take a freeze,
and got enough gold to rock ice in all hype.
Used to be a general but just lost his stripe
Pipe dreams and white feinds and all-nighters, collect calls from lifers
Astoria walls with cypress, since I got a problem with the law-writers,
I kick some more items just to explore horizons,
the palm lady dreamt of this day so I'ma play,
the crib close smokin' with the big toast and lay

honourable mentions (Reply to this comment)
by dabachelor
here are some verses i think deserve honorable mention
streets disciple-from album street's disciple
Moonstruck stuck, slow as molasses in my actions
That's compliments of a fast spliff in the night life
In my flight jacket, adrenaline heightened, mimickin Tyson
after watchin him cut up Razor Ruddock
In the gutter, which was once ghetto prophecy is now ghetto scripture
Lookin back at it, blowjobs from pretty crack addicts
Older Gods wantin no static, told some lil' n***** they can have it
Coke baggin and toe-taggin
They took Will, let me describe him, a live one
I think that he was the true God's Son - not Jesus, but fearless
His ear was up on them sounds too, he'd hear somethin
not to his likin, and say 'Son they bitin you"
He never got to see my debut, wild-mannered
But wild with them hammers, n***** frontin couldn't stand it
Took him off the planet, left us in 9-2
With the philosophy of what arms do, a true street's disciple
Everey gHETTO-sTILLMATIC
My skin is a art gallery, right - with paintings of crucifixes
Hopin' to save me from all the dangers in the music business
Was once a young gangsta hangin' with youth offenders
But since I tasted paper it started losin the friendships
Watchin'Kids freeze in winters, they still poor
How could I tease them with Benz's and feel no remorse
Drivin' past them in the lively fashion, diamond colors clashin'
Red stones, blue stones, red bones and black ones
F*** did I expect with bucket seats in a Lex
And spendin' time in Chuckie Cheese with Little Des
Got guns when I'm with my daughter
Hate to bring a violent aura in her presence
She knows what daddy taught her, it's lessons
Black princess it's a ugly world
I put my life up for yours, see I love that girl
Could you believe even my shadow's jealous
My skin is mad at my flesh, my flesh hates my own bones
My brain hates my heart, my heart makes the songs
Though my songs come from the Father
I'm lonely...
Hold me, it's gettin' darker]
Get Down-from God Son (his flow here is fluid as water which kills it even more)
New York streets where killers'll walk like Pistol Pete
And Pappy Mason, gave the young boys admiration
Prince from Queens and Fritz from Harlem
Street legends, the drugs kept the hood from starvin
Pushin cars, Nicky Barnes was the 70's
But there's a long list of high-profile celebrities
Worldwide on the thorough side of things
Livest kings, some died, one guy, one time
one day grabs me, as I'm about to blast heat
40-side of Vernon, I turned well he asked me
"Whatchu up to, the cops gon' bust you"
I was a teen drunk off brew, stumbled I wondered
if God sent him, cause two squad cars entered the block
and looked at us, I ain't flinch when they watched
I took it upstairs, the bathroom mirror, brushed my hair
Starin at a young disciple, I almost gave my life to what the dice do
Yeah man, throwin them bones
Hopin my ace get his case thrown
His girl ain't wait for him, she in the world straight hoein
While he lookin at centerfolds of pretty girls
showin they little cooch, gangstas don't die he's livin proof
The D.A. who tried him was lyin
A white dude, killed his mother durin the case
Hung jury, now the D.A. is bein replaced
Pre-trial hearin is over, it's real for the soldier
Walks in the courtroom, the look in his eyes is wild
Triple-homicide, I sit in the back aisle
I wanna crack a smile when I see him
Throw up a fist for black power, cause all we want is his freedom
He grabbed a court officer's gun and started squeezin
Then he grabbed the judge, screams out -- nobody leavin everybody
My way-Lost Souls
Gateways, marble floors, chandeliers
Juzzi's, gucci soap, throwing cash in the air
Though I, still feel broke with millions in the bank
And deals on the table, I focus to stay afloat
And just to think some would die to get with I got
They think its alot, the blink of an eye, you could get shot
N***** is wolves, coming if you ruthless or not
But i be on point, put you in places where bodies rot
Never knew murder till I seen my man get popped
No blood soaking, laying there, eyes still open
I got a little closer, put my hand in his palm
He was looking right through me, Yo staring beyond
I wonder what he saw, the limoes, movies and tours
Did he die in vain and represent for the cause
Now I put his name on everything I'm involved
And that's the game, Ya'll can't relate, f*** ya'll (Ill Will)

mad respect for this in depth article, im a nas fan, but have new found respect (Reply to this comment)
by dabachelor
mad respect to dude who wrote this, very insightful into one of the best writers not just rappers of our time-it actually occured to me after reading this that nas possesses poetry and lyric skills unlike ne 1 i can think of in hip hop-he was such an intellectual at such a young age, and his flow was so natural and unforced, just fluid...i also agree with most of the verses put, not sure if u included the one of the verses from 'what goes around'coz any of those verses were exceptional, but mad respect,im in awe of nas even more, he has a mad body of work that u just have to be in awe of..

Son.
First of all, i know. It's been a while. I'm like Jay-Z; retirements just a word. I miss y'all.
Now....
Seeing as you chose to try to find the top 25 verses of my all-time favorite rapper, which is no short order, i must say you did a pretty damn good job. AZ's verse on Life's a B*tch was unexpected and extraordinary, and the opening verse of NY State of Mind is one of Nas' defining moments in hip-hop for me personally. My only differing thoughts are that a) i think at least one verse from 'Represent' should be on here, maybe because it's my favorite song from illmatic and b) that "i can" deserves a spot on the fringes of this list. But overall, nice job m, you in college now?

Wow, that was a superb list. I'm really glad you included a verse from Take It In Blood, his most under appreciated song. In my mind, lyrically (disregarding content), it stands up to Memory Lane or anything on Illmatic. Although I do prefer the 3rd verse (that line about "simply follow me flow/put poetry inside a crack pot and blow" gets me everytime.)
And I agrees with your choice of NYSOM as the #1 Nas verse. Before I heard that song I just knew Nas as that dude who did the corny "I Can" song. But after listening to it, I became a full-fledged Nas stan. The sheer amount of imagery he packs into that verse is astonishing- I'm glad they never made a video for that song because it would ruin the image I have in my head (grainy black-and-white film, with lots of quick, frantic cuts of Nas and the New York streets). Great list for a great rapper.

Nothing from "Nas is Like"? Blasphemy! That's one of his best songs ever.
But this is a sick list.. glad you included a ton of stuff from Illmatic.. hard to top that. Can't argue with any of these picks.

Thank you everyone... (Reply to this comment)

for the comments, and I'm glad people are bringing up choices that they think I left off (I want discussion in here).
PDT, I love NY State of Mind II...but I think my only excuse is that there are just maybe 15 other Nas verses that I love to death that I couldn't even fit as an Honerable Mention.
I see 2 people brought up "Purple" and I think I socked myself in the face when I realized that I left that off. I'm positive that should have been an Honerable, if not just cracking the top 25.
Snik: The reason there weren't any from God's Son or HHID is because those are his more recent albums and by now, while he is making great songs and verses, they aren't legendary status for him, they are nowhere as innovative or jaw-dropping as the ones that he would make early on. He is basically a rapper who has done everything he possibly can. I somehow chose two from Streets Disciple though, but I guess that is because those two are really unique. BTW, where do you see It Ain't Hard to Tell getting 4 stars? That's one of the most revered songs on the album, I've never seen it get anything less than 'classic'.
Carnage, I remember you're the fan of "Every Ghetto" cuz you gave that the 100 star rating on your review, which is cool because I love it when somebody sees the genius in a song that nobody else sees. Every Ghetto is a great song but honestly, just like with NY State of Mind II, there are just so many verses I would have loved to include on here.
Noah, those are some ill choices man and I love all of those songs but...as I say above, leaving off any of those verses really hurt me but I really could only make a top 25. Nas is just too good.
Peace!

This is a beastly concept and write-up. Thanks for pulling this off excellently, but you left to many great verses off of here. Here is a small list I comprised off of the top of my dome if you will:
1st verse of "Purple"
1st or last Verse of "What Goes Around"
Any verse of "Fetus"
Any verse of "Get Down"
1st verse of "N.Y. State of Mind II"
Any verse of "Heaven" - it would be top 10
1st verse of "Live Now" - Nas' best verse ever
Last verse of "Undying Love" - mind blowing
I also think that the "Life's a B*tch" and "If I Ruled the World" verses should not have made the list. Otherwise, this is a near perfect essay and bottom line, Nas deserves a top 50 verse list.
PEACE

Props for puttin' "Small World" on there, too, I lo-ha-ha-ha-ve that song. As far as guest appearances, I woulda considered his verse on "Road to Zion" too. "Drunk By Myself" is one of my shady loner personal anthems, rofl, so that definitely woulda made it on.

I'm not that much of a Nas expert, but from what i do know, i was just wondering if you considered the last verse from Every Ghetto (Stillmatic) and also the entire verse from Fetus (The Lost Tapes coz those two verse completely blew me away when i heard them.
Props

Big props for including "Verbal Intercourse" in the Top 5. It's obvious to say Nas stole the show there, but that's seriously one of his finest moments - the flow & delivery, the lyrics, they are all absolutely flawless. Unsurprised that so many "Illmatic" got so many nods here, but I am surprised nothing popped up from "God's Son" or "Hip Hop Is Dead". You listed a lot of tracks from "The Lost Tapes," that's one of the few albums I don't have from him - I gotta cop it.
Props for including "It Ain't Hard To Tell," whenever I go and read reviews of Nas' debut they always pass this off as 4 stars. It's one of the most legendary songs on "Illmatic", the only song that doesn't live up to the album's remarkable standard is of course the infamous "One Time 4 Your Mind". Excellent list, glad to see I spurred you on to do this.
Peace

Anyway, this was an excellent write up, Marat. I'm not as big a Nas fan as you are so I dunno how much I'd disagree with you on these choices. Keep up the good work man.

In too deep (Reply to this comment)
by balogun
I never would have thought that anyone remembered that song from the In Too Deep soundtrack (but then again, the soundtrack was nothing special and the movie bombed). It brings back memories, though; I remember copping that joint and watching that movie in '99. That has to be the most unjustly forgotten Nas verse, period.
This has to be the best write-up you have done so far, Marat. I really have no complaints about the list. Nas has so many great moments in his career, it would have been extremely hard to do something like this, let alone decide on his #1 verse (I'm perfectly okay with "NY State of Mind" snatching the crown; that joint still gives me chills when I hear it). But, knowing the big fan you are, I know it was but a piece of cake for you! LOL
Peace!
