Special Education can be challenging to put in place but it can provide tremendous benefits to the child and the family.

basically went through the same as you with the system. They too are in Massachusetts. Their son went to a special needs school but was taken out too early, put in public schools (bad mistake) and 2 years later after fighting the system put back in special needs classes. Those 2 years drained the parents when he could have gotten help.

Today he is back in public school and seems to be adjusting well so far but still taking ridicule from other children. He has grown in his mind to ignore the rude behavior of some of the school children.

I know you wrote this 5 years ago but I just came across it. I thank you for writing it. It makes me see how much this boy has changed.

I do hope your child is doing well.

My oldest is type I diabetic and in some ways we've had to travel a similar road. The problem we had is that in the last few years he has become more independent, yet they seem to forget that an aide/clerk MUST go on field trips. Several times they waited to the last minute and in one case I didn't let him go on one since the aid was too old to walk, thus not being with him as needed.

Now we're at a new school so new challenges!

Thanks for the comment!! Who knew when I joined this site that I would ever make it to 500? It just kind of creeped up on me. Well, now there is no where to go but up - on to 1,000!!

For the mother's day wishes and comments on the piece. I did want parents to get some benefit of what it is like to negotiation the IEP process. Sadly, it is not the way it should be - everyone advocating for the same thing. Sometimes it just comes down to the parent being a sleuth to find out what is needed and available and then wrangling it out of the school system.

I am thinking of how I want to word this response :)

I wish all parents were up to date of their rights and IEP issues. I am often amazed at parents who do not speak up and just are unaware. I think the school system assumes parents read through the Parental Rights packets that are given out (well parents should read them, but you know what I mean).

Often at meetings there is limitations on what some of us can say as well -- the area you mentioned about services, etc, is a good example.

I know many, many parents who have actively advocated for their child and gotten needed services and accommodations. I always admire that.

Thanks - yes those IEP meetings are intimidating. I am a lawyer and used to confrontational meetings, which, unfortunately, they are sometimes. What I find hard is that we are all talking about my daughter as a "special needs" kid when I see her much more as a whole person that is a little quirky. I really respect any parent that has to go through the proecess.

on number 500. I've been to quite a few of those IEP review meetings over the years, both as a parent and a teacher. It can be quite intimidating for a parent.
Kudos to you for understanding the process and holding your ground. I know it's sometimes quite a chore to squeeze services from a school system.

On the 500 mark, but more importantly on the time, effort, and devotion you've obviously dedicated to your daughter.

Best regards!
