My Top Ten Heavy Metal Singers

The Bottom Line This is my top ten list of heavy metal singers.

Lots of singers have beautiful voices, but that doesn't quite cut it for hard rock and heavy metal. You need a voice that growls, screams and commands attention. I grew up in the 80s, the decade that really brought heavy metal to the forefront of popular music, so I've listened to more than my fair share of heavy metal. Which singers stand out? This is my list of my top ten favorite heavy metal/hard rock singers.

Honorable Mention: Lemmy - Motorhead Nobody mastered the raspy burnt out screaming voice quite like the undeniably ugly lead singer of Motorhead, Lemmy. You know I'm born to lose, and gambling's for fools,But that's the way I like it baby, I don't wanna live for ever

Ten: James Hetfield - Metallica Hetfield's deep growling voice fronts one of my favorite heavy metal bands, Metallica. Try to sing along if you can, without scratching your vocal chords. New blood joins this earth and quickly he's subdued through constant pain disgrace the young boy learns their rules

Nine: - Ozzy Osbourne Former front man for Black Sabbath, successful solo career, starter of the Ozzfest, and star of his own reality television show, there is no denying the popularity of the Why You Shouldn't Do Drugs poster child. A man who can't be understood at all when he talks, Ozzy could yell out the vocals of all the heavy metal themes with perfect clarity while retaining that raspy yelping quality that makes it metal. Asking me who is right Asking me who to follow, Don't ask me I don't know

Eight: - Axl Rose - Guns n Roses The sneering snarling quality of Axl's voice puts him squarely in my top ten list for heavy metal singers. Following Neil Young's advice, Guns N Roses rose quickly, then burned out rather than fade away. But when GnR shone, they shone brightly.welcome to the jungle we got fun and games

Seven: Bon Scott / Brian Johnson AC/DC Its a tie for the number 8 spot, I couldn't decide which AC/DC front man was better. Bon Scott had a sarcastic leering quality to his vocals and will be missed, but Johnson kept Australia's best heavy metal band squarely on the map with his powerhouse vocals on Back in Black and all their albums thereafter. she was a fast machine, she kept her motor clean

Six: Steven Tyler - Aerosmith Call me biased, but I'm putting my own neighbor from Boston's south shore on my list as one great singer. Aerosmith has been around since the 70s, and they are still rockin'. Tyler's high pitched growl is unmistakable. Sing with me, sing for the years Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears

Five: David Coverdale - Whitesnake This guy still has it, his voice is incredible, smooth yet powerful. Whitesnake would be just another forgotten band from the 80s if not for the vocals of Coverdale to front them. ,in the still of the night, I hear the wolf howl honey

Four: Rob Halford - Judas Priest Another band that spearheaded heavy metal in the early 80s was Judas Priest. Leather clad Rob Halford screamed like he meant business. out there is a fortune waiting to be had, if you think I'll let it go you're mad, you've got another thing comin

Three: Klaus Meine - The Scorpions This band has always been one of my favorite exports from Germany, and what heavy metal is all about. Although lately, Klause can't hit the high notes, in their hey day, Klause Meine raspy multi octave voice led the way for the twin guitar attacks of the Schenker brothers and dozens of heavy metal staple songs. it's early morning, the sun comes out, last night was shaking and pretty loud

Two: Ronnie James Dio - Elf, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Dio This diminutive singer practically defines what a heavy metal singer should sound like. With a voice that commands attention, and a scream that rocks as loud as heavy metal guitars, Dio kept Black Sabbath viable after Ozzy left, fronted bands like Rainbow, and finally formed his own very successful band Dio. you've been left on your own like a Rainbow in the dark

One: Robert Plant - Led Zeppelin Back in the day, when the term "heavy metal" was coined, THIS was the band that they were referring to. Robert Plants multi octave voice and screaming vocals set the standard for generations of singers to come. and if you listen very hard, the tune will come to you at last
