Nicole's Top 10 Feel Good Romance Movies

May 26 '07 (Updated Feb 13 '09)

The Bottom Line Screw that lame high school crap.

That’s right – I hate those high school girly movies where the jock is a nice guy who gets the non-Prom Queen girl or whatever. I’ve given one exception, but that’s because it’s good in other ways as well (and come on, everybody loves it). The slew of movies that came out a few years ago can kiss my cute little rear end. These below are not as sappy as other movies out there, as they include other fun stuff as well as the lovey-dovey part, and I also like to think that if I had a man, he wouldn’t want to shoot himself in the head if I wanted him to watch it with me.

You won’t find a whole lot of angst here; hence the “feel good” part in the title. We’re not aiming for girly-movie-requiring-a-box-of-tissues here. Here you’ll find laughing, smiley, “That would never happen but it’s fun to think it might anyway” movies.

1. French Kiss - Absolutely loved this movie from the first time I saw it. Meg Ryan is always amusing and cute, and with Kevin Kline as a French thief, it’s hard not to enjoy the banter and situations they end up in. I’m pleased to say I got this DVD for Christmas and will even go so far as to say it’s probably my favorite movie in the romance genre. Very nice soundtrack by the way.

2. Bridget Jones’s Diary - Any woman who likes romantic comedies has seen this movie. I’m sure even some people who don’t usually venture into the realm of the romantic comedy have seen it. Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant, and Colin Firth all have their intertwining issues surrounding Zellweger’s character Bridget, who is clumsy, a verbal train wreck, and a fabulously imperfect woman. A movie you’re sure to enjoy – and yes, most of us women tend to end up lip-syncing ridiculously to some song at one point or another.

3. Only You - Another movie I adore and think is super-cute. Toying with destiny and the name of the man she’s supposed to marry, Marissa Tomei goes so far as to abandon her engagement and fly to Italy in search of him. She bumps into Robert Downey Jr. instead and good times ensue. Too bad Robert’s a druggie – he’s such a good actor and the interactions between him and Marissa Tomei are so well done. Oh well – he’s not Robert on the screen anyway. He’s his character and that’s all we need to pay attention to.

4. While You Were Sleeping - Love doesn’t happen only in Europe. Sometimes it happens right here in the USA – in New York…after the guy you’ve been lusting after gets robbed and knocked into a coma at the El. Be careful, as his brother might just be cuter and even better once you get to know him. That’s Sandra Bullock’s problem with Bill Pullman anyway. Though it’s hard to decide, I’d say the best part of the movie is Peter’s confession about the squirrels and Jack’s reaction.

5. Sixteen Candles - I couldn’t help put this one in here even though it is high school style. But come on, John Cusack, Anthony Michael Hall (who got extremely hot by the way), Donger, and hilarious situations that don’t all completely revolve around the girl-guy plot? How can you resist? And besides, a happy ending complete with a hot guy and birthday cake? Time to throw off the birthday hat, baby.

6. Dirty Dancing - Ok, I know the people here are a little young as well, but it’s a very good movie, and what I think is quite impressive is the fact that Patrick Sawayze and Jennifer Grey really, really disliked one another, yet they pulled it together to impress audiences everywhere with their onscreen actions. A little more serious than some of the other movies listed, but in the end it is still a movie that makes you feel good – and makes you want to get up, dance, and have the time of your life.

7. Kate & Leopold - I have to say right now that Hugh Jackman is one of the hottest men on the planet. I SO envy his wife and any woman who gets to come into contact with him (but that doesn’t mean I’m going to get all stalkerish because that’s just not cool). Either way, why can’t I have some hot 18th century guy come from the past to hang out with me? It’s movies like this that remind me I might have been born in the wrong century or continent.

8. Romancing the Stone - A movie a few people have compared me to when it comes to the main character of Joan Wilder and her hidden desire for a man that embodies the heroes she writes. Let’s just say that if my sister ever moves to Columbia (which she’d be nuts to) and I get a treasure map in the mail from her deceased husband and have to deliver it to some guys that have kidnapped her, if something like this doesn’t happen to me, I am going to be so pissed off.

9. The Princess Bride - My kind of fairy tale. A little warped, ridiculous, but a whole lot of fun and with a touch of “Awww” sweetness. Let’s face it – even a lot of guys love this movie. And why not? With R.O.U.S.s, fire swamps, sword fighting, torture devices, shrieking eels, and the almost inconceivable mostly dead person, everyone is bound to enjoy this rescue the good guy’s one true love story.

10. Something’s Gotta Give - A last minute add and a movie that’s so recent I’m not surprised I didn’t think of it sooner since I was looking in movie archives for stuff instead of recent material. This time it’s a playwright who’s got some romantic issues. All my friends always eyeball me when the character is a writer… Opposites attract in this goofy movie with Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson. And while my roommate ogled Nicholson, I suddenly found myself thinking “Wow, Keanu Reeves is really hot in this movie.” Maybe it’s because he’s just a regular guy instead of a S.W.A.T guy or a bullet-stopping messiah. Another movie with a good soundtrack.

I’d recommend any one of these movies to friends and family if I knew they enjoyed romances, comedies, or both together. Some I’d probably recommend even if I wasn’t sure. Either way, if you ever hear my older sister and I reciting lines from some of these movies, don’t be surprised.

“Hey Luc, look what I bought. It reminded me of you. …Awww.”
