You think if I liked an album so much, I could spell its name right.
Also, check out Sam/Leslie Phillips, formerly of CCM and now alt-rock and (ex?)wife of T-Bone Burnett.

compiling this list. Of course, lists are only definitive to the people who make them, and as usual, I disagree with some of your inclusions as well as some of your exclusions. Props for ranking Liz as high as 61(!) when you dislike her so incredibly much. I was glad to see My Bloody Valentine on there, but disappointed by no Slowdive ('Slouvaki' gives 'Loveless' a run for its money). Of course Nirvana had to be on there, I don't doubt their influence at all, but I really dislike their music. Well done on including both Vs. and Ten from Pearl Jam's catalogue. I saw no PJ Harvey - may have to scan again - or Aimee Mann, that makes me a sad Aly. But other than that, well written and good justification for most all of these.

Re: alt.altness (Reply to this comment)

It happened...a lot. I had a lot of issues with bands like nine inch nails (industrial in general, I decided against it) and like you said Nina Gordon post VS seems rather pop to me. I agonized over the choices. Basically I set up a list of like 200 alternative artists (or "alternative on the surface" artists). From there I attached what albums I thought were their best (could be multiples) to their names. And from there I started crossing out bands that didn't seem like alternative or didn't have any great albums only a few great songs.
Alternative is such a weird, unidentifiable genre. I hesitate to call it a genre even because there are so many bits that go into it.
Thanks for the observation--you definitely identified one of my biggest challenges.

alt.altness (Reply to this comment)
by voxpoptart
Intriguing list, full of stuff i at least like well-enough, and in the top 20 alone i'd completely second the greatness of Automatic for the People, Little Earthquakes, OK Computer (though i'd've taken Hail to the Thief or Amnesiac first), Nevermind, Achtung Baby, and the specific songs on Post that you mention loving. And definitely, it's a list of "alternative" music.
I'm curious: were there a lot of favorite records since 1990 that you had to throw out as not being alternative? I took a couple minutes' scan of my year-by-year album file, and i can see how quickly i'd've been thrown into indecision ("Tori Amos is alternative, and Vanessa Carlton isn't, so where does that leave Ben Folds or Regina Spektor? Can i pick Dar Williams and Dan Bern because folk music fans are weirdo hippies, and Amy Rigby because she's sorta country music but my country-music-fan friend Gabby has never heard of her? If Veruca Salt are alternative, is Nina Gordon still alternative when she leaves the band, teams with Bob Rock, and makes a record that sounds like an idealized version of Heart?"). Did that happen to you?
cheers,
- Brian

Thanks for the suggestion--I've heard "of" them but never actually explored their music. I'll have to check it out.

The MM version is really pretty freaky. I kind of like it, of course the original is pretty excellent.
I suspect you'd like the rest of Violator too.

YES I have heard Personal Jesus! I have like... three versions.
I have the Depeche Mode version (from GTA San Andreas).
Then I have two Marilyn Manson covers, one of them has a different intro. Theres a pro wrestler named Austin Aries who uses that as his theme.
Okay I'll teck it then..

Glad even you agree ;)
Depeche Mode is definitely a different breed. Have you heard Personal Jesus? Well, yeah...that's pretty much how good the whole CD is.
Thanks for stopping by.

Blood Sugar Sex Magic... I think it's not only one of the best alternative albums ever (even though it's not my expertise), but it's one of the best albums of all time. RHCP were on FIRE with that one. Never heard Depeche... but that sounds good.
Nice list... Peace

Please feel free to use my list as some guidance--of course there are albums that are definitely excellent that didn't make it. I'm just one lowly voice.
Anyway, thanks for the comment.

Okay, first of all, I listened to Depeche Mode's Violator again and was just blown away by it. Still! So it makes me happy that you put it into your #1 slot.
Secondly, wow did I lose track of music after 1993 or so. I have a lot of catching up to do. I may be using your list to help me do so!

Shelly,
I pulled out my U2 "The Joshua Tree" and I think I have slightly blocked it out of my mind from the constant playing of it when it came out. I like Rattle and Hum also. I guess I just can't believe that it was 1988 when it came out. The late 80s really bring back some great music. I am glad that you put this list together. There are some that I have not heard of surprisingly and I can't wait to check them out. Thanks!

If you're curious, my favorite U2 is Rattle & Hum but I think their best is probably Joshua Tree.
But that's just me. Achtung is right up there...high (obviously).

Thank you for stating it so eloquently:
"And yes, Nevermind gets as much criticism as praise, but that's one of the reasons it deserves to be here as well. Even today, people are still debating it's greatness."
And thank you for stopping by.

Re: Interesting (Reply to this comment)

For me Violator belongs, and the consensus is that I'm not wrong. I think part of the hang-up is that something about Depeche Mode is very 1980s. Violator just happened to be released barely into the nineties.
Thanks for the comment.

Elephant? That infrequently? I would argue it has some of the best replay value of any CD on this list. I adore it and could listen to it daily--as it is I listen to it every few days which is saying a lot considering the baby and all.

I am really happy to surprise, even if it is only slightly.
I for one am very hesitant to pick up on new artists. I'm always afraid that the album won't deliver as well as the single. I'm glad this list proves there is some hope in modern music.

Dear Shelly, I just wanted to make certain that I thanked you for putting together such an amazing amount of music -- most of which, I'm ashamed to admit, I've never heard. But now I intend to. Thank you again, these entries prove beyond all doubt why you're a category lead. Regards, Telynor

I was waiting to see what your top 10 were going to be having read the others on the list. I have to say that U2 Achtung was their best as well or at least my favorite. I haven't listened to Nirvana in a long time. Think I will break it out. This was extremely well thought out and written. I really enjoyed it.

Yes, and ummm YES!
Excellent choices, I was wondering where Elephant by the White Stripes would make it. They seem to be one of the only bands around today that can really write some modern alternative rock.
I also agree that Blood Sugar Sex Magic had to be top 3, that CD is just too darn good. And yes, Nevermind gets as much criticism as praise, but that's one of the reasons it deserves to be here as well. Even today, people are still debating it's greatness.

Good Job on the List! (Reply to this comment)
by helenekhoffman
Looks like we don't really have the same taste in alternative music (of your top ten, the Nirvana and Radiohead albums are the only ones I really like start to finish--the others I've heard I find rather inconsistent), but that's cool. :) This was fun to read and well put together, and it reminded me that there are so many "classics" in the genre I've yet to hear in their entirety.
