Billing errors with an unwillingness to resolve.

I've never been one to review a company unless they really impressed me, I'm usually not one to say nasty things. However, after an on going issue with this particular company I think this needs to be heard.
I joined the Doubleday Book Club because I love to read. Honestly, it was very easy to pick out books and have them arrive at my door. I loved the service, the books only took a couple of days to arrive and I got a really good price on them. I fullfilled my purchase commitment with my first order where I paid for 4 books at regular club prices and got two books for 1.99 each with 2.49 flat shipping. So for a total of about 11 books (with my inital order) I paid around 70 dollars. Since all of the books except for the children's book (which was actually a pack of 6 paperbook books that I only count as one book) were hardback this is a really good price.
I was ready to continue to take advantage of their program but I noticed a pesky amount due showing on their website. I contacted my credit card company but Doubleday had billed them, so I contacted the book club who promptly advised me my credit card had refused the charge. I rebuttled with the rep a few times who then provided me a fax number to send proof of payment in to the company.
Within 3 days I had sent my proof of payment and waited for the credit to apply to my book club account. And I waited.
So I contacted them the following week (I was advised the fax proof would only take 24-48 hours to show the credit on my account) and spoke to a manager who advised me she would just give me credit since they never got the fax. I was thankful and got off the phone feeling my issue had be resolved.
I waited. Finally I see a credit applied, but I still had a balance showing! It wasn't even possible, how does 37 dollars minus 37 dollars equal 37 dollars?!
So I decided the best course of action would be to fax the company the proof of payment again. Maybe it wasn't received and if they got that my issue could be resolved.
I sent two proofs of payment in the same week, getting a bit anxious for this to be resolved. Finally I got a reply. The company were now claiming that they had in fact given me a credit back to my credit card the same day they billed it (but wait, didn't they tell me my credit card declined it? And why if you got the funds you needed would you ever return it?). Needless to say, I am still at a loss to what to do here. My credit card is unwilling to dispute the transaction because the card laws don't allow for disputes of "money not recieved" and doubleday is refusing to credit my book club account although they have in fact been paid. I'm unfortunally the person who is out this money if I wish to avoid having my account go to collections.
I would advise you to avoid doing business with this company. I don't know if my case is a fluke, but it's been a long month, and it's just going to continue to go on with this company until I get this issued resolved, which it hasn't been to date.
