Star Wars Starfighter for Playstation 2 is a great shooter game. It is not as linear as some of the previous Star Wars games, such as the Rebel Assult series. It is also no where near as tedious as some of the Star Wars games for PC. I've read several reviews of this title and they all gave it high marks.
The graphics in Starfighter are really stunning. Your first mission is a training mission flying through a canyon, and the backgrounds and surfaces are all very lush and detailed. Explosion effects are top notch, especially when you fly through the debris of an enemy fighter that you just nailed. The sound is also wonderful, as it is with almost all Star Wars games. You will hear actual music and sound effects from the Star Wars films.
In the game, you fly different fighters in each mission. There is a storyline that develops along the way, and part of this storyline involves having to use different ships for different tasks. So far they all handle about the same, but have slightly different weapons.
Combat is like the Descent series of games, where you have full 360 degree control. With the left thumb control you move and aim, while the right thumb control is used to spin around. You also have the option of internal and external views of the ships you are flying.
My only complaint is that some of the missions can get to be tedious, as most involve having to shoot down wave after wave of the same kinds of fighters. Just when I was starting to get really bored with a mission, it would end.
If you like good space shooters, you may want to check out this title. There was a lot of work obviously put into it.
