Neopet Food Finds: From Budget To Gourmet & Everything In Between

Jul 13 '07

The Bottom Line Learn about all the different foods you can feed your pet at Neopets.

Feeding your Neopet is one of the many things that you need to do to ensure that they are happy. Other things include making sure that they have toys to play with and reading them books to increase their intelligence level. Contrary to popular belief, your Neopet will not die from starvation but it isn't exactly nice to let them sit there and be hungry for weeks on end.

If you are up for a true challenge you can try to qualify for the Gourmet Club. In order to earn points towards the award you have to feed your pet something with a rarity rating between 90 and 100; this gets to be extremely expensive so make sure you have a lot of NP [neopoints]. My pet has only had four gourmet items, when I first started out I thought it would be cool to try to go for the aware but to qualify for even the bronze award you have to have at least 637 points.

There are a lot of different shops and stores where you can buy food. Some of the more popular ones are The Bakery, Coffee Shop, Health Food, Hubert's Hotdogs, Super Happy Icy Fun Snow Shop, Faerie Foods, Slushie Shop and the Food Stall. You can also check the Trading Post and Auctions to see if there are any food items up for grabs there. Once a month there is a Half Off Sale; this is the third of every month and all of the regular shops have their items for sale at half the regular selling price. Things go quickly so don't drag your feet if you hit a shop and there are tons of items up for grabs.

In my Safety Deposit Box I currently have 1,229 food items [a total count of 33,507 pieces of food]. Almost thirteen hundred items might sound like a lot but that is a fraction of the food items that are available at the website. This includes Special [Flaming Scorch Candy, Green Tea Custard and Easter Neggs] and Retired [Bread, Chicken, Eyeball] food items. I try to stockpile things right after the Half Off Sale so that I don't have to spend a lot of time searching the Shop Wizard for food for my pets or to stock my shop.

If ice cream is what your pet wants, there is no shortage of it at the site. The lower priced items include Mint, Toffee and Peach Ice Cream as well as Tigersquash, Fish Flavored and the uncommon Strawberry Ice Cream Tonu Cake. If you are looking for something inexpensive but a little on the spooky side then hunt for some Mummified Ice Cream, these are currently selling for about 20 NP but the price will go up when Halloween rolls around. Spooky Gooplecream sells for a few NP more but seems to be just as tasty as the less expensive spooky foods. Any variety of ice cream sells out quick at the food shop so if you are lucky enough to spot it when it restocks, jump on it.

Spooky and Gross foods in general are the cheapest in Neopia; Glaring Eye Wrap, Squishy Brain Wrap, Jellied Eyeballs, Slimesicle, Octornapie and Meatballs and Worms are usually all under 25 NP and will fill your pet up but there are some that you will want to avoid at all costs; the Poisonous Lollypop being one of them. Some of the Spooky and Gross foods can make you pets sick while others, like the Magic Ghost Marshmallows, can cure them of certain diseases. The MGM's are expensive and the price always foes up when Halloween rolls around so stock up on them when the prices are somewhat reasonable.

Scouting the Meridell Dump can yield you some free food like Meridell Gravy, Strange Green Seeds, Squished Tomato, Zeenana Peel, Old Croutons and a rather disgusting looking Rotten Artichoke. If you can't snag anything from the dump you can check the Shop Wizard for them; most of these items sell for less than 15 NP so they are a cheap way to throw your pet a snack. There's no set time to The Dump so it's all luck. While you are at it, you can check to see if the all knowing Coltzan will toss you some free food, you can find that here: www.neopets.com/desert/shrine.phtml

The Neopet "dailies" like the Tiki Tack Tombola, Coltzan's Shine and Fruit Machine can give out food items too. Most of the time you will end up with Homemade Marmalade, Yellow Growth, Brown Sauce, Homemade Gooseberry Jam, Ummagine, Tchea Fruit or Bagguss. Coltzan does give out burnt foods items too, you can feed those to your pets but they won’t fill them up as much as non-burnt items. If you don't know where the links are, here's a short list:

www.neopets.com/water/fishing.phtml
www.neopets.com/desert/fruitmachine.phtml
www.neopets.com/prehistoric/omelette.phtml

If you are short on cash but can't get anything at the Soup Kitchen, omelettes are the way to go. Each one will feed your pet three times so if they are a little hungry, one omelette should be enough to satisfy them. You can get a free one every day if you visit the Giant Omelette located in the Tyrannian Plateau. Some of the common ones are Sausage and Pepperoni, Carrot and Pea, Green Pepper, Bacon and Broccoli and the Plain Omelette. If your pet only takes one bite, the omelette is still in your inventory but now has a slightly different name ' 2/3 Green Pepper Omelette', if it takes another bite it is reduced to '1/3 Green Pepper Omelette' then is disappears.

The Golden Dubloon can be found on Krawk Island and is a gourmet restaurant where you can pick and choose what your pet has to eat. There are four food groups to choose from and the menus do differ from time to time. I hadn’t taken my pet there in a while so I made sure that I stuffed him full of food first [that is the best way to ensure that you get a doggie bag, usually a very rare piece of food]. The items that I picked included the Caesar Salad [1 Dubloon], Baby Bloater [3 Dubloons], Berry Fun Pop [2 Dubloons] and Keel Haul [2 Dubloons]. Each 2 Dubloon coin costs roughly 4,000 NP so this isn't exactly a cheap meal. After dropping all that money on Dubloons, my pet [even though it was bloated] ate it all and I left with nothing. That is the risk that you take, sometimes there is a nice pay off and other times you get nothing.

Another daily food site to hit is the Giant Jelly located in the mysterious and hidden Jelly World. Some of the flavors you can get include Lime, Cornupepper, Glowing and Poisonous Jelly. These shouldn't be confused with Jelly foods that can be purchased in shops [Lemon Jelly Pop, Strawberry Jelly JubJub and Lime Jelly Blumaroo to name a few]. You can find the link to Jelly World here: www.neopets.com/jelly/jelly.phtml

And last but not least, do you know about the monthly freebie? Not only will this get you a piece of food for each pet but it will also give you two thousand NP [total, not per pet]. You can find that fabulous link here:

The Bottom Line

Feeding your pet isn't something that takes long but it will keep them happy. If you plan on taking them into the Battledome you will need to make sure that they are happy, content and well fed. The Neopet website has a lot of great activities for members and it can teach pet responsibility for younger players. With over two thousand different types of food in Neopia and more added each week, there's enough selection and variety to ensure that your pet never gets bored!

As always, thanks for the visit…
