by wildflowerneu
Cabaret, The Producers, Singin' in the Rain, Gypsy, Funny Girl, Chicago, Rent, Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis, etc. (I LOVE West Side Story - glad it was numero uno)

Quite surprised to see Quadrophenia in an American's list. Love never reigned over it much outside Europe. Fine inclusion. Now if only Les Mis was also there...

I'm such... (Reply to this comment)

a Kelly fan that I would likely not only put Singin' in the Rain here, but also An American in Paris. Nobody's ever going to top the 17 minute ballet at the end of that film for sheer beauty and creativity in cinematic dance.
I'm also a sucker for the Music Man, the real version with Robert Preston (not the recently made one with Matthew Broderick).
Great list!

I appreciate all the comments y'all have left, and you're picking some of the same flicks that I had to cut as I winnowed the selection. My "11th pick" was "Singing in the Rain", and that was a very painful cut because it *IS* so good and it is a justifiable classic, but I didn't want to cut anything else to make room for it, and I considered it "of the same era" as "Top Hat", so then it came down to which stars shined brighter, and IMHO, I like Fred Astaire better than Gene Kelley.
I also wanted to push "Evita" onto the list, but in the end, just didn't think it was QUITE as "favorite" as the others.
See ya!

I think (Reply to this comment)

I would kick South Pacific and replace it with Carousel, not because it isn't wonderful, but because I prefer the second choice and wouldn't want to flood the whole list with Rogers and Hammerstein. Although I would never think to put Dirty Dancing on a list of musicals, now that you've done it, I can't deny its right to be there. It's too bad nobody has filmed a great movie version of Les Miserables.

Can't argue with most of these.. (Reply to this comment)

...with the possible exception of the excellent and oft-overlooked Quadrophenia, though I respect your selection of an "outsider" in the Top Ten. (The Ken Russell film version of "Tommy" was God-awful.) Movie versions of musicals are tough to make work...I would have included the recent version of "Chicago" which I thought was outstanding, and I'm surprised you didn't include the mid 60s Rex Harrison-Audrey Heprburn version of "My Fair Lady," though we all know Hepburn didn't actually sing the part. I, too, would have considered "Cabaret" and "Singing In The Rain," as noted in other comments, and probably dumped "Dirty Dancing" and "Top Hat" to make room. Other that merit consideration but would not have made my list: I'm not a big fan of the old Streisand vehicle "Funny Girl," which a lot of people liked a lot. Of course, "Mary Poppins" was huge, too.
"West Side Story" as No. 1 has to be the obvious pick, certainly for my generation. What a tremendous transfer of floorboards to celluloid.
Good post. nick

Very good choices. I would have added Cabaret, and left out Grease. Nice job. Sheila
