Just My Opinion: Writing Motorcycle Reviews
by donc230 | Jul 28 '07
People who are seriously looking for a motorcycle have a little different set of priorities than those people looking for a car.

I never thought about writing a motorcycle review but if I ever do, I'll know where to find guidance!

A,

Thank you for the vote of confidence!

Yes, I have spent a bit of time in Europe. Most of that time was at the expense of the "employee owned company" I used to work for (that's the US Army), and under the sponsorship of BMW (when I was president of their largest motorcycle club). I will say that I loved almost every mile! You are right, there is a different level of "respect" for motorcycles there.

There are a couple of versions of "heal - toe" like shifting that I use on a motorcycle. The first is one called "trailing brake" - where you sort of use your rear brake (on un-linked systems) to cause an oversteer. The other is where you can match the engine speed (using the heal of your hand on the throttle while pulling the front brake lever) to the desired road speed for a smoother shift (sometimes without the clutch). It's a bit tough to explain, but it works. It also extends clutch and transmission life!

Safe travels, and stay in touch,

Don

and repost it in some kind of cars and motorsports arena where I can give you an MH. Truly Don, you are the star of the Cars and Motorsports category. Bikes, cars, tires, accessories, you got it all. You are the guru!

Emotions, build quality, highs and lows you got it all. Have you ever driven in Europe (where 2 wheelers still are common every day transport due to traffic problems)? You would love it there. I am sure you have gone there, someone of your caliber, maturity and interest by definition likely has experienced life over there, but I would humbly request you to email me to tell me where you've gone over there. It makes me homesick.

I just joined the family business, it's a long story, but my father needed a helping hand with some really bad software. I managed to find a few ways to make it better, but this time I cannot go to Italy. So, it must wait until next year. I have a 4 mo year old son I wanted the great grandparents to meet, but alas that has to wait. And alas, I have to wait to drive on those little mountain roads that call to me.

Do you heel and toe downshift (or vroom rev match on a bike?)?

Ciao

Tom,

>I thought the first rule of motorcycles was >only young, wispy and willowy, 'to die for' >passengers, most often of the blond >persuasion..??

Ahhh, as even my own BMW has grown from 465 pounds to over 625 over these years, so have the rest of us :)

Go ahead and drag the 650 out, I'm sort of looking for a 350 myself...

Your essay makes me want to drag my old 650 Suzuki out of storage and go for a ride. Just like when my B-I-L rides his new Harley over to the house.

you said...

I thought the first rule of motorcycles was only young, wispy and willowy, 'to die for' passengers, most often of the blond persuasion..??

Maybe I am remembering my riding days through a bit of nostalgic fog . . ..

Anyway, very nicely said.
