"Cracks" in HP's Story (Reply to this comment)
by mom24monsters
I have a similar problem with my HP DV 6500, but my problem started or at least was noticed about a week after my warranty was up. It looked like scratches on the part where you put your hands and running diagonally from the bottom left corner of the control key to the edge of the computer, but soon it was clear that it was not a scratch, but a crack with sharp edges, on which I actually cut my finger. it is obvious that nothing has been done to my computer, there are no marks around the crack to indicate that it had been roughly treated or anything. This computer is babied and is never handled roughly at all. Now, I have another crack that runs from the bottom of the right hand rest and is going up toward the keyboard and another one that is starting like the others, it looks like a scratch that goes from the right edge of my computer and is headed toward the fingerprint reader. Should these two cracks meet, I'll lose that entire section of plastic, including my fingerprint reader.
This computer is the replacement for a DV 6100 that when it was sent in three times, HP would send it back to me with nothing fixed or even more broken on it, including a crack on that when I got it back the last time I sent it in. This is actually my third. The first I had for about a week, and when the lock on the screen started to crumble, I didn't even use that lock, so have no idea how that happened, I took the first one back to the store! The first two were DV 6100s. I thought I was getting a great deal when HP sent me the beefed up DV 6500 to replace my broken DV 6100, but now I have to wonder. When we called to tell them about the cracks a couple of weeks ago, they out right lied to us and told us that they have no record of the plastic developing cracks, therefore, they won't take care of the problem because it is no longer under warranty. After reading that they have been aware of this problem since before I got this computer in November of 2007, but told us that they had no idea that this was happening, I am very angry about it! All I am asking for is that the part be replaced, not for a new computer. I should be able to use my computer without having to worry about cutting my finger on the sharp edges of cracks that are obviously caused by the poor quality of plastic they use! Because they went with cheap plastic, problems like this should be covered for the life of the machine. Apple covers their computers, even if they are out of warranty for things like battery problems, if they find that there is a problem with the battery that was not caused by the user, or if it is a problem that they have found over time, so why can't HP take care of problems that are obviously their fault? Why do they feel that they have to lie about them?

We own two HP dv9000 Laptops too! (Reply to this comment)

We bought two of them Dec 2006 for our homebased business. I'm glad to see I'm not the only who thought the unit ran hot when used. I like the features and the look but the heat concerns me. I originally thought I had done something to the unit or that I had a virus that was making the computer work extra because the fan runs alot and there's heat build up on the mouse pad.
Anyway thanks for writing your review

Design flaw, not abuse related (Reply to this comment)

I have found literally hundreds of dv9000 buyers with the same problem -- and it is heat related. I've now taken apart 4 different dv9000 models and all of them have exactly the same defect in design.
I started a website dedicted to solving this problem, please take a visit if you experienced it. www.notebookhingecrack.com
Note that it also happens with other HP models, like the dv6000.

Me too! (Reply to this comment)

Yes, I have had the same problem with my dv9205TX. The casing at the bottom left of the screen, where the lock mechanism is, has cracked and now I have to squeeze the case together when I open or close the lid so as not to cause any more damage. What a piece of cr@p!
And re the heat - yes, I could probably cook an egg on mine. And the fan runs constantly, even when I put it to "sleep".
