For months I have been checking Epinions to see if this book comes up. Marguerite Patten has 2 books to be reviewed but not this one. It has been my bible, for the kitchen, and I am proud to write about it.
I purchased it at age 19 at the expensive price of 2 pounds 10 shillings ($3.75). This was before we went to 100 pennies to the pound in 1971. The reason, I got married first time around, at that grand old age.
The book still has the original jacket on it with a photograph of a casserole. The inside of the sleeve tells us about the book.
Here at last is a cookery book which caters for everyone, whether you are a busy housewife with a family, cooking 3 meals a day, 365 days a year, or a career girl cooking spasmodically and in a hurry!
This certainly appealed to me. With over 1,000 recipes and 100 color pictures, to help create that perfect dish.
The Contents or Index is at the beginning and makes finding a recipes extremely easy.

Next comes the Introduction.
This explains that with this book you can create meals for every occasion. From snacks to a dinner party. It also includes cooking techniques, hints on buying food and shopping without costing a fortune.
Over the page and 'The Guide to good cooking'.
This includes:
Weights and measures =
Solid measures.
Liquid measures.
French weights and measures.
Oven temperatures.
Cookery terms.
Successful home cooking.
How to follow recipes.
Good kitchen tools and gadgets.
So you have waited this long to hear about some of the recipes. Where do I start with so many?
Christmas.
Wonderful recipes for Christmas cake, Christmas pudding and Christmas Alaska. The Christmas cake I made every year I lived in England. The page is stained with wiped away food and turning yellow with age.
Not only does it give the ingredients and how to cook, but also suggests this can also be a Wedding Cake. Explaining how to make several tiers of different sizes. An illustration of the cake is to be found with other wonderful cakes too.
The section of Vegetables starts with 'Making the best choices'. Then ways to serve vegetable. How to use up left-over vegetables and one I love 'Easy remedies when things are wrong'.
All the recipes give the cooking times, how to cook, what temperature for both gas and electric. How many people they will serve.
This book was published by The Hamlyn Publishing Group Limited. London - New York - Sydney - Toronto. My book was published at Astronaut House, Feltham, Middlesex, England. Although it was printed in Czechoslovakia. Surprise.
My final thoughts.
When I saw the New York, it made me wonder if it was published here in America. I would love to know if anyone else has a copy. I have told my daughter she has to wait until I pass on before she gets it. If you want a cook book that has everything, simple to read, food coming out perfect every time you cook, then this is the one for you. Perhaps with me writing this review we may get the company to re-issue this book.
I just love my dirty stained cook book, that can bring photographs of perfect food off the page and into my dining room. From grilled cheese to a banquet fit for a Queen. Marguerite I look up to you.
Thank you for reading.
