Watch out: American Ex-press Travel Insurance insures very little
I have been a "member", aka customer of American Express since 1984. First the Green, then the Gold -yearly summary of expenses helped me sort expenses for the tax return, but as I found out from my accountant, it’s not worth the $150 yearly cost of the card which offers nothing more.
When they offered the Platinum which I declined, and very happy I did.
Then, on one trip, after so many before that, for once, I had a problem - I was bitten by a Centipede at Kona Airport. It was a nasty experience, followed by a very disappointing realization:
1. Baggage coverage: does NOT cover the return trip
2. Medical: I am still waiting for them to reimburse 3/2008 Emergency Room expenses
3. Hotel expenses due to Medical Emergency: NOT covered
4. New travel expenses due to Medical Emergency: NOT covered -missed my flight, had to pay for that too
My coverage included the $209 yearly + Medical (14.50, per flight) and Baggage (9.50 per flight). It was a bitter conversation with several “Representatives”.
I had trusted AMEX. Two years later, I've decided they are not worth that trust. The second betrayal does not concern Travel, it concerns the terms of their “hardship” contract: they voluntarily mix “Your Payment Terms” of the contract with “What You Should Know” (two paragraphs down): the wording is such that any trusting client, understands this paragraph as a consequence of default payments. More on that is now everywhere on the net.
