| z_jeep's Full Review: JVC TU-7100DU Integrated Dish Network Satellite TV... |
I've been with Echostar for 4 years now. I've owned several receivers and been generally pleased with the performance.
I purchased the 7200 around Oct'00. The feature I was most interested in was the AC-3 optical jack; secondary was the DISH 500 Capability. For $200, it was cheaper than upgrading the older units I already had.
From the start, this unit began to annoy me. First on power up. The setup menu's, this took far too much time to coordinate than a typical receiver. Constantly waiting for the unit to download instructions and coordinate the install. This gets very time consuming if you need to troubleshoot your setup.
Next, the WEBTV. I had no interest in this feature, but the whole satellite system is based around it. The user is reminded occasionally to purchase the service, for $24/mo.
PTV, a great feature, but again, required to pay for it. The system is built in, but you can't use it. Again, reminded to pay for this feature @ $10/mo. You do however get 10 minutes of use for free, what a bargain since it's my receiver.
But why do I mock this unit you say? It's been very unreliable.
The Hard drive is always on, and the drone can get loud and annoying during dialog of movies, occasionally creates a distracting chatter when it's seeking information.
Generates allot of heat, hot enough to keep it outside of a A/V rack.
It takes almost nothing to overwhelm the CPU in the system, the result is slow jittery menu scrolling, occasionally jittery video, un-sync audio, or just fails to respond and locks up. The only way to cycle the power is to unplug it from the wall. Then go through the whole setup again.
Maintenance? You bet, Dishplayer even has it’s own phone menu in tech support! Sad they have to pre-screen between Dishplayer and others.
Within 2 weeks, the unit failed. It constantly powered on to Webtv and wouldn't go to Satellite. Echostar reported this as a Hard drive failure and exchanged the unit.
Within a year, I had the exact same problem. This followed immediately after a software update. Echostar claims my hard-drive failed again. This time with a $80 exchange fee.
My other units are still functioning without problems. Unless you absolutely need it for parts, avoid the 7xxx series, far under developed for consumer use. Echostar should be embarrassed support this product.
