The Bottom Line Hear it Here

Okay. So, a while ago I had this crazy idea to make an imaginary album....of my lyrics. Pretty pointless right? Yeah, that's what I've been thinking most of this time I've been putting it together too but, if nothing else, I figured it would be a fun experience that might chance my approach to writing my lyrics. And, when you get all but laid off from one job and fail to capture a second one that was all but guranteed, you free up alot of time. I'm not saying that I've had nothing but time on my hands up to a month ago into the summer, but this has been far from my top priority and it's been completed for a little while now. So, the result is this...my debut album (if you will and will not think I'm compensating for something here). Adding a little something to and keeping with my unfounded title tradition, the title is Past, Present, Future ([Don't be so] Tense) and this song is the first single off it, if I actually had this thing, with music and vocals added, naturally, on wax. Look at me strange because I'm taking this a step too far or enjoy it and drop a comment with your thoughts. I'd prefer the latter, obviously, but, hey, to each his very own. Expect the rest of the ‘album’ to ‘drop’ mid-September.

Track #8: Working Out (Distance)
My beater is wrinkled and it’s a good picture
It’s not the setting I would prefer to give her
But she said don’t move
Said I want to remember you, just like this
Laying on the bed, head in yawning fists
It’s no metaphor for bliss
But it is what it is:
Two young lovers tied together by emotion and lips

“This can’t be summer love”
The radio sings
"I miss your hair in my face"
My phone rings
But she lives down the state border
And when I miss her it stings
And I know you’d say I hate to sound country
But the car’s in the shop, I don’t have a job
I haven’t talked to you in weeks
I’m no longer that punchy music snob
All our conversations are insul(t)ations
And it’s not doing anything to keep the heat in
So what’s the point of plastic?
Only heat scares away the creases

The beat keeps our time and dulls our minds from the pain
If you’re in love, it’s beautiful
If you’re depressed, it’s just rain
You’re out there dancing in the street
Unless you’re in there staring, out the window, looking bleak
And if you’re missing somebody you wonder if it’s pouring where there at
A wet shirt layered up and down in pink
Your hugs were as powerful as that lengthy thunderclap
She knew that was your favorite shirt
Here’s a subtle wink
The images make you glad
Makes you smile, makes you weak
Makes you crazy, makes you sweet
You wouldn’t tell her now, but you really do care
Just another example that life’s not fair
You’re playing basketball, she’s playing hooky
She’s the money you need coming in and you’re the bookie

At times like this, the memories make you happy
Because you stop thinking about how far away she is
The pictures side by side on the beach
And the memories of awkward compensation by the reef
How crazy it was, that you had the perfect shot and didn’t pull the trigger
Now you miss her
Eh, that’s me for ya, go figure
But I hear she’s holding out for you too
Till next summer when the sky turns blue
It’ll be a long haul, but the cable car never stops moving
Even if the driver has no idea what he’s doing
(I heard that) She’ll meet you under the streetlights, late at night
Across the street from Jojo’s and next to the chapel of Christ
Then we can continue our natural high of a life

We see everyone around us get their problems fixed
While we remain in the midst of a car wreck
She ignores you; you don’t have a steady paycheck
It works out for everybody except me
Until it works out for me and some other kid says “It only works out for him, not me”
It’s a repetitive cycle that doesn’t have a heading
Or ending
The song that never ends has to start somewhere
