Forget Diamonds -- Get Your Wife This Phone!

Written: Dec 28 '01
Pros:Completely portable, good range and reception.
Cons:Sometimes it comes unclipped from your waist or belt.
The Bottom Line: Why strain your neck or be tethered? This cordless phone is probably the best one of its kind on the market. A must for a busy mom.

How did I function in my home without this telephone? It's hard to imagine life without it!

This telephone is one of my all-time favorite gadget purchases. I bought it two years ago at a local appliance store, Best Buy. It costs approximately $75. It is worth every penny.

Features

What a loaded little gem this phone is!

This telephone is completely portable and cordless. It weighs a little less than a half-pound (most of that weight is the battery). The major advantage of this phone is twofold:

1. It completely frees your hands and body while you are talking. You are not "tethered" to anything.

2. It saves your neck. No more craning your neck when you need to do something while talking.

The front of the phone is a rubbery dial pad. The phone conveniently has re-dial and memory for about 10 numbers. There is also flash which is useful if you have Call Waiting or other functions on your phone line.

The back of the phone is a built-on belt clip. You can clip the phone onto the waist of your pants or your belt. It is so small (about 4 inches) that you can also stick it in your pocket.

A one-ear headset is hard-wired to the phone. The earpiece is cushioned and very comfortable to wear for long conversations. The headpiece is completely adjustable.

The phone comes with two rechargable batteries. You seat the phone in the cradle to re-charge it. Leave one battery on the phone, and put the extra battery in the storage compartment behind it.

The extra battery comes in handy when the current battery runs low. If you keep it in the charging cradle, you always have a phone that is charged and ready to use, by changing batteries.

Reception is a powerful 900 mhz. I have no trouble with reception anywhere in my 2600 sf house, either upstairs or down.

You can adjust the volume of the earpiece easily with up and down arrows.

The phone gives you the option for 100 channels, so interference will not be a problem.

You can also adjust the ringer tone and volume to your liking.

Usefulness

As a busy mom of two small kids, this phone is a Godsend! I can wear the phone and carry on a conversation while doing almost anything: folding laundry, cooking, cleaning, helping my kid in the bathroom, running up and down the stairs -- just about anything!

The mute button is great for when my kids begin to carry on, or when I need to yell at them without yelling into the telephone. (Yes, I'm serious. Moms out there, you know what I'm talking about...) When you press mute, you can still hear the caller, but the caller cannot hear you.

Also, when I am working (I'm a work-at-home technical writer), I often use this phone to speak to a client while I'm working on their document or using their software. It's much better than a "speaker phone" and really saves your neck.

What I Would Change

There are only two things I don't like about the phone, but they are not really major.

1. Sometimes, because the phone is a little "bottom heavy" when clipped, it can fall off your waistband. I have found that if you clip it to a stiff pair of pants, like jeans, or to a belt, this usually doesn't happen. Sweatpants are the worst; you need to be careful.

2. The phone gives you very little warning that the battery is about to die. There is no "battery low" light, only an audible beep. But you don't have much time. When you hear the beep, you must immediately change the battery, or the phone will die. You can do this in mid-conversation without losing your call. The caller will hear loud "snow" (so warn them to take their ear away from the phone for a moment).

Overall

Overall, this phone is great! If it broke today, I'd run right out and get another one. I can't imagine life in my home without it.
