Re: I Went Through This With My Other Half, Too! (Reply to this comment)

Hi KC!
It's a small world ain't it? I haven't been here at Epinions for a long time - I was surfin for people who survived this surgery (I hear 9 out a ten don't make it)and it brought me here and then I saw your comment and remembered yur name and how nice you are. Anyway, I go under the Knife tommara for torn rotator cuffs - yep, two tendens torn completely off and retracted (I tore em wrestlin ... well its a long story). And I promise, NOT to ask any of the Grouches to hand me TP - what is that anyhow?. This review is kinda scary, wish me well. As always, BadBob

Len had his rotator cuff surgery a few years back and he can't move the arm above his shoulder. (Reply to this comment)

The other one was just as bad but he refuses to have the surgery done. He moves in the wrong way and hells out in pain.
Two shoulders and neither work good. He never complains.

Wow, what an ordeal... (Reply to this comment)
by davidp24
...I feel your pain. Seven years ago I was almost hit by a car and broke both arms. I know how helpless a feeling that is. I couldn't do anything - even putting on my pants required me to lay down on the bed to do it because I couldn't raise my arms in a north/south motion. Then, after a month of occupational therapy and getting better, a cab I was riding in going home from occupational therapy (I couldn't drive) collided with a bus and my back injuries caused me to spend an additional month with the occupational therapy along with a new month of physical therapy. So I can identify with your hardship. I couldn't open a soda bottle, couldn't open a window, couldn't comb my hair, etc. Anyway, Barbara, I hope that you're on the mend. Think of the bright things - no hurricanes down here in Miami this year (knock on wood). Take care.

Wow, Barbara, I sure hope it's getting much easier for ya. Do you have osteoporosis? Steroids just cover up the problem. Be well.

Hi Barbara, I just found this today. I don't know how I missed it. (Reply to this comment)

As per earlier conversation with you, I too had this surgery. I was fortunate in that my surgeon gave me some good advice and a thorough idea of all I would be going through. I was prepared...I thought.
All was well except for two things. Left hand use that's not "trained" for particular jobs and having to sleep sitting up for more weeks than I thought.
I am very lucky in that my arm is stronger than it ever was after going through a few months of therpy.
I hope yours goes well.
Always wishing you the best and thanks for writing a piece that may be helpful for some else some day.
Best,
Phil

First of all, ~*~Happy Belated Birthday~*~!
I am so sorry that this recovery has been so difficult. It sounds super-extensive!
I truly hope that your life gets back to normal as soon as possible and that you will make a full recovery before you know it and be able to do all the things you want to do! How's that for a run-on sentence? ;)
Thank you so much for sharing this info with others. There are so many things the doctors just don't tell you, like you said.
Big Hugs to You,
MZ

Yup, matie. I'm a med-tech.... one of those shadowy dudes who hide in the dark serology lab and only come out when the nurse can't find a vein and the intern is no where to be found. ;oP I try not to hum an opera aria when I draw blood from folks, tho... think that might have the opposite effect from 'soothing'. :o)
Keep on getting well!

You've been through hell and back.
My mom had a total knee replacement and rotator shoulder cuff surgery and I went through the knee replacement with her, pregnant with severe vomiting, and it was horrible. I remember her being in so much pain.
My heart goes out to you and I hope you're doing better.

I broke my collarbone in a freak accident in July
and I wore a sling (on my right arm) for six weeks. The sling is finally gone, but I still have a lot of pain and my arm/shoulder isn't even close to as strong as it was before the accident - the doctor also told me that it would probably be Christmas or maybe after the first of the year before my arm/shoulder was back to normal.
I hope your shoulder gets better real soon.

you've been going through such unpleasantness. Shoulders are very finicky. I somehow strained mine in my sleep--but cortisone relieved it. We should all be as lucky, huh?

Re: So glad (Reply to this comment)
by ifif1938
wouldn't you think so...when I told the Dr today how this really threw me for a loop, that I really didn't expect to have such a difficult time, he said , well, this is a difficult surgery with a hard recovery...how long I asked would it be till I felt somewhat normal, he said it was up to the way my body heals and the therapy I have...but yes, by Christmas I should be feeling good...:) by then the water in my pool will be really cold I said, he laughed...yup, really funny..
Suzi, funny thing, I mentioned to the girl that took me into the room about the Bra thing, funny, she said, nobody has ever mentioned that before and yes, she could see that it would be a problem....It'a a mystery to me, that there really isn't some sort of pamphlet or imformation that they would have or be aware of to pass on to the patients..
Oh well, thanks so much for your good thoughts

You got this out of the way, and thank you for sharing your experience. As you know I worked with an orthopaedic surgeon for my years, but really didn't know what people went through. I would think most doctors offices would surgery patients with at least a leaflet of what to expect, avoid, do, etc. Perhaps not. . .
Feel better soon. Maybe you can get into the pool pretty soon?
((Hugs)),

Really really great essay, Barbara! I'm sorry that you had to learn about these things first-hand, and I'm really grateful that you're preventing many others from having to learn it the hard way by posting this. :o)
We folks who work in health-care sure tend to take a lot of things for granted indeed... It is really cool to be reminded that others who don't spend everyday in that setting can't be expected to know what to expect. I have to stick someone with a needle or a catheter nearly everyday, but to each of those patients, it's a new experience for them... Now I'll try harder to always remember that. Thanks a bunch!!
Hope your recovery is going well! Kudos to your husband for being supportive, too. Well done!
Cheers,
Smorgy :o)

Casey...I'm feeling those purple healing vibes as I write this...that and my vicodan...:)
I well remember the showering...couldn't even get a deoderant stick in that arm pit for at least a week, and when he handed me the TP roll I nearly died!
Oy, those were two of my biggest problems..managed somehow though..:) But still can't get a razer to shave under this arm...I'll have a bush when all this is said and done..but who wants to know all that..LOL
I'm so happy to hear that he has 95% mobiility now, that's a good thing...I had 0 as I'm sure he did and if I can get to that point I'll be happy
What happened to Howard? are we talking Creech? I've been wondering about him recently. maybe I'll e-mail himm but wouldn't want to bother him.
Loving that black pepper cream you sent..I love them all and have actually have been using them everyday..
Many thanks always..
Hope you know how much you are appreciated by me

Dusty, Yes, I know...I had your numbers 1 and 6 and they weren't fun in the playground either...interesting, how after time passes you forget how painful whatever procedure or surgery you have had can be...sorry to hear you have been through so much and I hope that it's all behind you now.
Thanks so much...
