Breathe In. Come Out. HORROR IN THE WIND

Written: Apr 28 '10 (Updated Dec 14 '10)
The Bottom Line: The government makes everyone gay!  What happens when they turn the country on it ear, or rear, as the case may be!  Hilarious poke at politics and gay rights.

Horror in the Wind (2008) Directed by Max Mitchell

"You don't need lessons.  You saw Brokeback Mountain.  Just drink a lot of whisky, and trust your instincts."  Richard....

Richard and Ed are best friends.  They share everything; there work in bioengineering to control pests by interrupting the sex drive.  They won the coveted Golden Tomato for desexing the plague of fruit flies.  And they are sleeping with each other's wives.

Richard and Ed are working on a project to control the rat population of New York by making the rats lose interest in sex.  And they have a formula that seems promising.   That is when their project is co-opted by newly elected President, Pat Robertson.  He throws an obscene amount of money at them, but he wants results FAST.  Well, formula 4708 seems to work.  It certainly seems to quell the desire in their two test subjects; Reverend Karl (Robert Puryear) and Wanda Sue Tucker (Katie Mehrer) they feel no desire for the cute (and gay) subjects Bethany and Hank.

There is a break in, and before the boys can say, this is a bad idea; President Robertson has waged war on sex.  The whole country is sprayed with 4708, and the cure will only be administered to married Christian couples.  But there is no cure.  And 4708 does not suppress sexual desire; it only reverses sexual orientation.  Now all the straight people in the country are gay!

This low budget indie film is very tongue in cheek.  It has the quality somewhere between best of the amateur films, and Uwe Boll in terms of technical details.  But it is unrelentingly hilarious.  The principle actors, Morse Bicknell (Ed) and Perren Hedderson (Richard) turn in fine performances (though Perren's white boy dreadlocks terrify me) hitting the right mix of geek and sexual freak.  I also love that they do not turn into leather clad bar sluts, like so many new queerboys, at least in the movies.  Instead, they turn into more sensitive caring and monogamous partners.  As they discover, they already loved each other; now their love just has a new expression.

The rest of the performances were a bit weaker; though I did enjoy their wives evolution towards lesbianism through nude yoga.  The president and Vice president were hilarious.  But the best part of the movie is, hands down, the news crawler on Fax News "News you can't get away from."  The one about Cheney was my favorite.

All in all, it's low budget, mediocre acting, and needs tighter direction.  And I still had a great time.  It was funny, aimed right at my demographic (liberal) and gay positive.  It was funny and acerbic without being mean spirited.  (Okay, President Pat Robertson and Vice president Paul Dobson might be a scoash miffed.)  There is a charming honesty to the fun they are poking, and it does have a message that sort of makes you think.  It isn't in league with The Birdcage or Priscilla Queen of the Desert, but it is a funny little comedy with a political bite, and a big heart.  Check it out.
