The Bottom Line Moe's Backroom Pale Ale is a good choice for the price, even if it is less than stellar.

Since I’m always looking for new beer to sample and review, I can sometimes end up bringing home something from a brewery I have never heard of before. This is especially true if I happen to find something new in the grocery store because it means I don’t have to make a special trip to a beverage or other specialty store. It was, in fact, at a grocery that I found my latest beer- drinking adventure. The product is Moe’s Backroom Pale Ale, a product made by the Tap Room No. 21 Brewing Company.

Basic Facts About This Beer:

This pale ale is golden/tan in color with the smell of caramel and both floral and citrus- enhanced hops. The foam level on this beer is nice and it lasts throughout the drinking experience.

This beer offers some interesting flavors. Pine cones, caramelized malt, some citrus and floral hops, and toasted malt rank among the taste sensations present. It leans toward the sweeter side and almost seems a tad like candy. The body of this pale ale is light to medium.

Moe’s Backroom Pale Ale is difficult to find official information on, but I know that the alcohol content is 5.7 percent by volume. I cannot find out anything else relating to the composition of this beer.

Food Compatibility:

This pale ale would make a good choice of beer to drink with any type of red meat, Asian foods, Chinese, and others. A (semi- hot) pepper steak Chinese dinner served over brown rice is one food that would match up nicely with this flavor.

Final Thoughts:

Moe’s Backroom Pale Ale is a new beer product for me. I had noticed this beer on the shelves at my local Kroger several times but I was never able to muster up the courage to try it. I had never heard of the brewing company- Taproom 21- and I was unwilling to buy a full six- pack to sample a product that may turn out to be well below average.

After finally giving in, I brought some Moe’s Backroom Pale Ale to my house and proceeded to learn a little more about it. The Label says “Brewed and Bottled by Taproom Brewing Company, LaCrosse, Wisconsin”, but I had my doubts about this proclamation. It seemed like a contract brew to me: A company that exists in name only that contracts its recipe to a local large brewer. Some quick research shows that there is no actual brewery named “Taproom 21”. Moe’s Backroom Pale Ale is actually a product made by City Brewery (Melanie Brewing Company) in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. It is one of dozens of brews made by this brewer.

Once I had the background information straight, I started to examine the beer. I have to admit, the appearance of this ale is impressive. The foam level is good and the beer leaves lace on your glass as you drink. The color isn’t deep, but the overall first impression is promising.

As for the flavor, well, I find this beer pleasant enough to recommend trying it, but it doesn’t compare to the better pale ale on the market. For one thing, it lacks the crisp dryness that I expect in a good American Pale Ale. Moe’s Backroom Pale Ale actually falls on the sweeter end of the scale. It is this sweeter character that gives it a candy- like aura. In many ways, it reminds me of a toned- down version of Anchor Liberty Ale, although the latter runs circles around it.

Overall, Moe’s Backroom Pale Ale is a good beer to try. It is easy to find (sold in many large grocery store chains) and the price is lower than most other beer. I like the piney and floral notes in this beer, as well as the citrus and the caramel. But the overall taste is a tad too sweet for this beer to be a classic and its body is a little too light. Still, Moe’s Backroom Pale Ale is a good, easy to find brew and it is easily worthy of a 3 out of 5 star rating.
