Mr. Clean Magic Eraser: A Product That Lives Up to its Name

Written: May 01 '10 (Updated May 01 '10)
Pros:Cleans where other cleaners fail; Ease of use
Cons:Disintegrates after only a handful of uses
The Bottom Line: Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is an excellent product that performs as promised.

Some stains can prove to be next to impossible to remove. Crayons, markers, and even some types of food can leave stains that are seemingly uncleanable, even when using the best multi- purpose cleaner and an abrasive scrubber. But before you give up completely on these and other tough stains, consider Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, a product that easily lives up to its name.

Eraser Facts and Figures:

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is a sponge- like object, rectangular in shape with curves on the sides. The Magic Eraser measures about 4.5 inches by 2.5 inches by 1 inch, feels like foam, and has a very fine grit that can be felt on the surface when the eraser is dry. The original Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is a white colored block, but there are other variations that offer different colors (and scents) on one side of the eraser, with white on the other.

To activate the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, all you do is add a small amount of water. After wringing out the excess water, the eraser is ready to use. It is safe for surfaces such as wood, metal, tile, and more. It can be used to remove many different types of stains without any harsh chemicals.

Final Thoughts:

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is a very useful product I only recently started to use and haven't been able to put down. This cleaning product is capable of removing tough stains that other cleaners and scrubbers are unable to budge, earning it high praise from consumers- some of whom swear by the magic eraser as an essential cleaning tool for any household.

I usually am one of the first people to try a new product, but it took me a while to try Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I am fully aware that this product is now several years old and I can remember hearing about it through the internet and on television back in the early 1990's. Part of the reason I didn't jump up and try it out is because its claims seemed a little unreal. How could an ordinary sponge or sponge- like product so easily remove so many different types of stains with such little effort? It sounded like a much- exaggerated product, so I didn't try it out when it first hit the market.

Now that I have used the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, I am a little disgusted---disgusted with myself for taking so long to sample this product and discover its many uses. I have two adventurous little girls and they often misbehave with their crayons and markers. They will mark the walls, their toys, the wooden frames on the beds, the kitchen appliances, and just about anything else that will accept a swipe of their favorite color of Crayola or Sharpie. These stains can sometimes be so bad, there is no way to remove them and in the past, I would often keep a small can of white paint handy to cover the marks on the walls. I tried different scrubbers, but nothing could remove these and other stains- particularly ink from a marker. Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, however, is capable of removing these types of stains and much more. Just earlier today, for example, my little ones decided to practice their alphabet, using a blue marker, on the windowsill. I first tried an ordinary all- purpose cleaner with no luck. I then tried a slightly abrasive scouring pad, but still no luck. Then, I remembered I had Mr. Clean Magic Eraser under the kitchen sink. A little bit of rubbing is all it took and the stain was gone! In the past, I would have been forced to break out the can of paint. It frustrates me when I think of all the cleaning opportunities that have been lost in the past several years, due to my own reluctance to try this product.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is good for most surfaces and it can clean up most any type of stain. Crayons, markers, and food stains are the most common in my house and I have found that Mr. Clean Magic Eraser wipes off fingerprints, crayons, and most anything else with minimal effort. The manufacturer claims that gentle rubbing is all that is necessary, but I have found that it sometimes takes a little bit of elbow grease to remove the really tough stains. Still, this is nothing if it means eliminating a difficult stain. And Mr. Clean Magic Eraser eliminates most of them with no problem.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser gradually disintegrates as you use it- much like the eraser on a pencil. It seems unusual at first, because it seems like a sponge and sponges are usually capable of holding together for a long time. Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, however, will slowly fall apart and is thus good for only a handful of uses. You will notice a difference with each use. The product will slowly fall apart, reaching a point where it can no longer be used and must be discarded.

Is the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser suitable for any type of cleaning? Well, no. The manufacturer recommends not to use Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on glossy or polished surfaces, probably because it could easily wear off the gloss with enough scrubbing. You should also never use it with chlorine bleach. The manufacturer doesn't say why, but I assume it is because the mixture of chlorine with the chemicals in the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser could make for a damaging and even dangerous combination.

I have heard many creative uses for the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and consumers continue to find unique ways to utilize the special cleaning abilities of this product. Some have used it to clean up white tennis shoes, making them look like new. I have also heard that some people use it to clean pitchers stained by tea, coffee, and other beverages. I have found my own creative uses for the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, including using it to clean my dog's metal crate and to clean marks from leather handbags. It also works very well at removing the stains on dry erase boards. It works well on all of these surfaces, without any harsh chemicals.

Overall, the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is an excellent product that cleans where other products fail. It has saved many items in my house from an otherwise certain date with the trash collectors and it continues to amaze with each passing day. It offers truly magical qualities and while it cannot safely eliminate any stain (can anything?), it is still an excellent product that everyone should try- particularly those with small children.
