I first purchased a hotwheels mechanix vehicle for my 5 year old son for a birthday present. There are a couple of reasons for my purchase, them being: 1-my son loves cars. 2-he loves building things.
I think that these cars are a great idea, it's like having two cars (or hummers) in one. You can customize the vehicle any way you want, and that is good because the kids are using their imaginations.
This toy is particularly useful because the more mechanix vehicles you buy the more options for a custom vehicle you have, because all parts are interchangeable.
The only problem children may have with this product is losing the parts. (may I suggest purchasing a rubbermaid container to store them in). There are a lot of small pieces, mostly just to the motor, you can build the engine in different ways.
I don't recommend this toy for small children, probably ages 4 & under, or if your child is older and still likes to put parts in their mouths.
For younger children this toy may also be a little frustrating trying to screw in the little screws, you may have to help the first couple of times, but they get the hang of it really quick, and they love it.
My son is now 8 years old and still enjoys hotwheels mechanix.
