War Film Fanatics (Reply to this comment)

For anyone who hasn't seen the Korean film "Tae Guk Gi (Brotherhood of War) I highly recommend renting it. It has the gritty look of Saving Private Ryan but with more of a story centered around two brothers who fight for opposite sides.

OMG!!!! LOL I missed this comment. "Shaving Ryan's Privates" was a spoof film made my brother's best friend. Hilarious spoof and good call.

Band of Brothers is not a movie - it's mini-series made for television. But I loved that series!

WW2 movies (Reply to this comment)
by someoldguy1
You have picked some great movies but I could add a few more like "saving Private Ryan", "When trumpets Fade"(I didn't think much of Dwight Yocome in this movie though.) "A Band Of Brothers" , "Tuskegee Airman" (A place where I had the pleasure of visiting a few years ago the old air base in Tuskegee AL.) Thanks for sharing your movie picks.

Saving Private Ryan never made this list? Really? That has to be not only one of the best WWII movies, but war movies in general. Any bias towards it? I could understand if you weren't a Tom Hanks fan or something of that nature. I just think that it's a intense look at a intense period of time.

Maybe we should make it 12 instead of 10. (Reply to this comment)

I really think Ryan should go in, along with 12 O'Clock High, but I don't know which should be pulled. While 'List' is truly a great movie, it's less of a war movie and more of an epic human drama. I think war movies should have at least one Audie Murphy type character in it. I just bought Flags of Our Fathers, and while the war scenes are chillingly realistic, the plot line was disjointed and the over indulgence that Eastwood took with Ira Hayes' personal troubles left me a little sour. Thumbs down on that one.

I have to admit that you've listed quite a few of my favorites here on your list. Patton is a remarkable film, and you're right about Scott being born to play him, every time I watch this one, I get sucked right into the story. I'm also glad that you listed Schindler's List as well. I'm surprised that you didn't list either Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan -- the latter with the opening sequence of the D-Day invasion is one of the most intense bits of filmmaking that I've ever seen. Excellent list! -- Telynor

I'd dump the overcooked Great Escape... (Reply to this comment)

...and add "12 O'Clock High" from among the black and white films of yore, or perhaps "Saving Private Ryan" from the more recent ones if for no other reeason than the opening and closing battle scenes.

Schindler's List? (Reply to this comment)
by criteeker
While S.L. film took place during the second world war, I would classify it as a "Holocaust film" not a World War 2 film. Besides, I thought "The Piano" was the more powerful film of the two.

Enjoyed your list.
There are no "good wars" [much as mostly "armchair generals" might have us believe], but there are some good war films, especially about WWII.
I especially appreciated your inclusion of STALINGRAD.
Some excellent suggestions here in the correspondence, too.
Since you include SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, you might also want to consider A WALK IN THE SUN. Spielberg's "epic" is simply a remake of the earlier film, with more blood and guts, and a different political point of view, a little more melodrama in the plotting.
Also, COME AND SEE, which would top my list.
Anyway . . . splendid job.

though, I must admit to only seeing three or four of these flicks. I'm not much of a war movie type gal. Thanks for sharing your opinions.

It was a country united and Hollywood was behind this war so different from future wars. That may be the reason for such good films made at that time.
Love your list as I lived through those years.

Okay list BUT no mention of The Devil's Brigade? Guns of Navarone? Kelly's Heroes? The Dirty Dozen? A Bridge Too Far? Glad you didn't like Battle of the Bulge - that was a joke of a film.

in most every film of his I've seen. The revisionists have given "Bridge" a beating of late, but its quality still stands. The film took so long to shoot that director David Lean's wife filed for divorce during production, claiming grounds of abandonment.
I recently viewed (again) "The Great Escape" and second your summary and placement on the list as one of the great bust-out WWII adventure films.
Although "The Best Years of our Lives" was not a WWII film in the context of your list, as the best picture (literally) produced regarding the aftermath of The Great War, it deserves an honorable mention (with an asterisk*); an objective fulfilled by this very comment.

(odd that a WORLD war is only well portrayed in American films with 1.5/10 exceptions!), since I've had my shot, "The Story of G. I. Joe."

Pearl Harbor?!
Seriously, you put together a great list of movies, though I personally have not seen all of them. But I enjoy a good war film, and I agree that WWII provides the richest source of material.

Re: Good List (Reply to this comment)

Saving Private Ryan is a decent flick --- entertaining and big in story --- but I don't especially care for it as a WWII flick because it doesn't have an epic story behind it. I find the concept of a mission to save one single infantryman to be utterly insignificant nex to flicks like Tora! Tora! Tora! or The Longest Day.
Just my opinion mind you...

Good List (Reply to this comment)
by shmoo1
... but a list of the best WW2 movies doesn't encompass the best of all war films. Patton, Bridge, Schindler's List and Great Escape are definitely on my list as the best war films but then you would have to add in Glory, Apocalypse Now (sorry George... I'm a fan)... man... there's a ton.
Out of curiosity, Where does Shaving Ryan's Privates fit?
