The Neopet website opened the NeoMall a few months ago to mixed reactions. I thought the idea and concept was a little silly; paying for items that could be worn or used by your Neopet but only for a certain amount of time. Far be it for me to bash something that has taken over the site and undoubtedly made them a lot of money in the process. With the addition of the real world cards it opens the market up to people who didn't want to pay with a credit card or PayPal.
What is a NeoCash Card? It's a lot like a prepaid phone card; you buy one, take it to the site and activate it so that you can purchase things for your Neopet. When the Mall first opened a lot of people were curious about it but they didn’t think that it would be something that would last. With the addition of the NeoCash Cards that are being sold in retail locations, it solidifies things and cements the deal. The NeoMall isn't going anywhere any time soon.
The cards are available exclusively at Target for the time being. With the lucrative deals that they have had going with Limited and Limited Too I would imagine that they would start surfacing there in the near future. The cards that are currently being sold at Target are the $10.00 and $30.00 cards. Other denominations will be available at later dates. You will have to keep checking the site to see when the newer ones are released.
If you don't want to spend that amount you can go to the Neopet website and purchase a $5.00 cyber card. Each unit of NeoCash is equal to one penny so if you buy a $30.00 card you are getting 3,000 NeoCash. If you opt to get a $25.00 or higher card you will receive a bonus deposit of 150 NeoCash and a free virtual item. All cards redeemed will net you a free virtual item but you will only get the bonus 150 NeoCash with $25.00 or higher.
The NeoCash Cards have a one year life so if you do not use it within that time frame your account will be 'credited' with random items to make up the amount that you hold in balance. Items purchased from the NeoMall have a ninety date pet life meaning that after the ninety days the item will be surrendered back to NeoPets; if you want to purchase it again, you will have to go back to the NeoMall and spend your NeoCash on it.
What are the advantages of buying a card at Target? Well, there are a variety of designs to choose from; that increases the demand for them but from what I have seen at my local Target stores, there isn't a shortage of them. Most of the stores that I have been to have them in the music or electronics section. Because you have to pay for them before they are activated they are trying to keep people from 'stealing' them and the possibility of them being sold on auction sites without actually being activated.
If you go to the Neopet website you will see the banners for the new contest. There are five grand prize winners that will receive a $25.00 NeoCash Card, 475 First Place winners will receive a $10.00 NeoCash Card. You can enter the contest once a day until it closes on November 16, 2007. I entered this morning and all they ask for is your name, email address and birth date; if you have a child entering the contest they may ask for a parental email address.
What's my take on the Mall? It is a nice concept but I would like to see the option to buy the cards with Neopoints as well as cash. Even if the cards cost two to three times as much in points as they would in cash, for someone like me, it would be worth it. Have I purchased from the Mall? No but I have purchased a NeoCash Card that I activated but I haven't purchased anything from the Mall yet. They are adding new things on an almost daily basis so I am going to wait to see what Halloween things they add and take it from there.
I have no doubt that these cards are going to be a hot commodity for Christmas; they make the perfect stocking stuffer for the Neopet addict and it is something that any fan of the site can use with ease. While I have my own personal qualms with some aspects of the site and that things are only purchasable for ninety days, more than enough people have shown interest in it or they wouldn't have gone through with the NeoCash Cards.
