The Bottom Line As it is impossible to make you love Bill Clinton, it is equally impossible to make anyone love George W. Bush. Even with your help.
In response to dad-daughters epinion piece titled "I wish I was writing for George W. Bush" Aug 08 '07 (Updated Oct 23 '07). I am posting this response because this whole business about George W. Bush deserves respect and that there is some kind of code of conduct for ex-presidents is getting childish and getting too high and mighty. Everyone knows that you cannot demand and expect respect. Everyone knows America above all other countries would be the one that would understand the value and the beauty of criticising the President even if it is by an ex-president. What George W. Bush gets is exactly what he should expect and more. So stop defending him like he is a victim when he is the most powerful and willful person in this country right now and possibly ever. --------------------------------------------------------- [There are two things that cannot be argued about George W. Bush. Whatever you may think of his politics, he really loves this country.] Name me one President who does not love his country. How much a person loves his country is not how we measure his ability to lead the country. In fact, George W. Bushs love for this country is the same amount that Bill Clinton loved during Vietnam war and less so than Gore and Kerry. [Second, he's a really bad public speaker. I'm sure most die-hard republicans are somewhat chagrined at his propensity to stammer, choose the wrong word, appear nervous, or have odd inflections. Even his facial expressions work against him.] Im sorry to say that we as American should not be ashamed of how we appear as public speaker. We have a long history of butchering English language (read Made in America by Bill Bryson). Therefore, George W. Bushs ability to speak is debatable. British people have long considered us a disgrace to the English language, but we could care less. We speak American anyway. His lack of understanding to world affairs and inability to act like a world leader is not arguable. [Now in fairness to him, he has been vilified by the mainstream media, by Democrats (both in office and out), and by just about everyone else in ways no prior President has been.] Clearly, you are biased in not considering how much mainstream media criticized Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and John Kerry. However, if you just didnt pay attention, I suggest you dig up some old periodicals in the library (just in case, FOX network is not a library; library is a place where you find information without animated red white and blue news flash at the bottom of your pages). [Before George W. Bush's presidency, there was a strict code of conduct followed by all ex-Presidents that you don't criticize a sitting President. Clinton and Carter blew that taboo right out the window, as they too joined in the "fun" of destroying "W".] Have you heard of Teddy Roosevelt the 26th Republican President? His attacks on sitting President William Taft was done while he was oversea in Europe. Teddy was kicked out of the Republican party and received more votes than Taft for election 1912. It is the duty of every ex-President to speak out. There is no such thing the strict code of conduct by all ex-Presidents. Just ask Teddy Roosevelt. The ex-Presidents during Bill Clintons time consisted of Bush Sr. (defeated by Clinton on economic issues), Reagan (suffered Alzheimer), Gerald Ford (legacy of Nixon), and Nixon (legacy of Watergate). Bill Clinton received so much criticism from the mainstream media, any criticism from Bush Sr. would have been pitiful and revealing about his family interests. The same mainstream media that criticized Bill Clinton now is praising George W. Bush. Therefore, it is with great courage that ex-Presidents like Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton would risk their personal reputation and legacy to speak against the mainstream media. Would you speak out against the President of the United States when you know you will be attacked immediately by mainstream media? [This hatred and evilness extended to Bush's daughters. Yet, this same press who reveled in reporting the Bush daughters' drinking follies declared Chelsea Clinton off limits during Clinton's reign, and gave Al Gore a pass for his son's recent arrest (and prior arrests).] This part is just down right silly and stupid for you to mention. You obviously learned about Chelsea and Al Gores son from the press. Dont also forget about Reagans children. Do you think Chelsea attempted to buy alcohol with secret service agents around and was not reported by the press? Once again, check your periodicals, there were plenty said about Chelsea. [The power of the press is enormous. Even in Clinton's worst days of stained dresses and real estate fraud, the media would report the scandals, but then in the next sentence explain it away as a "private matter". Not so with Bush, who's every mistake is run and re-run on the news shows and cable talk. He is mocked every single night on Letterman and Leno (if you don't believe me, just watch either show for a week).] Your exaggeration is unfounded and you treat Letterman and Leno like they are some kind of news anchor. You should know that they are comedians who make fun of news events. Let's face it, you just want everyone single human being to love Bush as much as you do. Besides, no judge or law would consider a persons failed investment and financial loss a fraud. If so, then everyone who lost money with Enron is a criminal. I dont think you know the difference between personal financial loss versus selling your shares of stock for profit because you have inside information and sold your shares before everyone else. Read rules of SEC fraud. [So, what's a punching bag to do? Well, the bully pulpit of the Presidency is a potent weapon. When you speak, you have an audience. Alas, Bush has not used this nuclear arsenal at all. I think his advisors told him to be "above the fray" and appear Presidential. It's a noble idea to turn the other cheek, but when you are getting pounded in the ring, you better defend yourself or everyone will assume you are a loser. That, I'm afraid, is the public's perception of Bush.] Many noble presidents are also the poorest presidents. Accountability is what counts. It is not noble to out a CIA agent for political reason no matter who is the president. For that, Bush is simply dirty (possibly dirtier than Nixon). The real problem is NO ONE is pounding Bush. Comedians and journalists are not legislators and they should be pounding because that's their job. Instead, Bush doesn't get any serious pounding and doesn't need to give any pounding himself because everyone else does it for him. Bush never talked about Kerry's swift boat. The media attacked Kerry for Bush. Why? Because Bush was no where near Vietnam but Kerry was. [He does not deserve all of it, but he has no one to blame but himself... and his dopey advisors who won't let him take the gloves off. So, I offer my services as political writer.] Stop this self victimization or self-pitty. You cannot name one good example of punishment or resistance that have truly affected his power. He is powerful enough to out a CIA agent without treason. He has been and still is above the law. [Here's some of my suggestions. When Ted Kennedy called the President a "liar" on the weapons of mass destruction, Bush should have said "Well, at least our troops in Iraq are safer than a woman passenger in your car, Ted. Let me explain why. In Iraq our soldiers are looking out for each other. No one was apparently looking out for Mary Jo Kopechne".] I would love Bush to say such thing. Ted would deserve it and so would Bush. And both political careers would end. Our soldiers have to look out for each other because our president and his clowns are not looking out for them. But to entertain your idea a little, at least Ted would have the courtesy to drive himself unlike that cowardess Bush who sent our soldiers to patrol the IED roads themselves with humvees that they had to modified with scraps. It is not better to get blown to pieces when your President and Secretary of Defense are not looking out for you and told you to fight with what you got and not what you would like. By the way, history is full of example when a country's ruler sent their best soldiers to their certain demise. Check out Roman empire, France, Germany, Japan, even we did for Vietnam. All in the name of glory and honor. Go see the movie, "Patton". Patton was known as the O' Blood and Guts. The foot soldiers joked in one scene, "yeah, our blood his guts." To think it took 10 years before the Soviets decided to get out of Afghanistan, we are already at the half way mark. Since we are bringing democracy to Iraq and Afghanistan, these 2 countries should have already been secured enough for our troops to come home. But no. McCain wants to be there for 100 years. Given that Afghan war bankrupted former Soviet Union, McCain is stupid to think that we have soldiers to send and money to burn forever. Don't forget, Soviets were far more brutal and merciless than we were. We are not going to win by spreading our love and throwing our money at people who want to kill us with bomb strapped to their chest. Christian democracy will never win their heart as long as we think Islamic culture is uncivilized or evil. [See, that is a home run out of the park hit. It leaves Americans remembering what Ted Kennedy really is, and makes Teddy less relevant in the public's eye. And maybe, just maybe, shame Massachussetts voters into changing Senators and righting a continuing wrong.] Obviously, you and many others immediately assume that when a person died in a car accident, its the result of murder. Sounds like you ought to be writing for CSI. Its kind of sick to think you feel no pain for people who suffered the loss of his love one. [When senior Senator Robert Byrd criticizes Bush or calls him incompetent, Bush should say "Well, I may not be the smartest man in the country, but at least I was never a member of the KKK". Oh, the press would howl, but Americans would see who is behind that curtain (or should I say hood).] Bush might not want to take that chance. Who knows what percentage of his religious right base is consisted of members of KKK. That is a definite no no. Majority of conservative religious rights are also white supremacist. Dont forget what the KKK like to burn in their big backyard. [When Clinton says that Bush is not the President he was, Bush should say: "You're right, Bill, I'm not the President you were. I'm faithful to my marriage vows. And by the way, my wife and I have a great marriage" (then wink at the cameras). All of us wonder about that Clinton marriage, and the lack of commitment.] I wouldnt put it past Bush to say such a thing. He has shown signs that he might not know the difference between being the world leader and a husband. [When Al Gore says Bush is the worst President in history, Bush should say: "You'd be President, Al, except you didn't carry your own state of Tennessee and I did. I guess the folks back home know you best."] But what about Bush as the worst President in history? [Since it is apparently OK to make fun of Bush's appearance, I suppose it's fair game for everyone. Imagine the fun he could have with Rosie O'Donnell or Michael Moore. Forget their appearance--their lives are just begging to be lampooned. Alec Baldwin, Sean Penn, Susan Sarandin, Cher, The Dixie Chicks.... It would be so very easy.] Those people .they are ACTORS and MUSICIANS. [Yes, it's hard to understand how someone with so much material is just sitting there letting manure get dumped on him. So I offer my services FOR FREE. Call me anytime George!] Your sincerity is admirable and even to a degree adorable. My advice is stay away from politics. You dont really want be there and to know the truth. You cant handle the Truth. People are usually happier worshipping their idols than to really know them as who they are. |
