Super NES

Written: Dec 31 '01 (Updated Dec 31 '01)
Pros:Huge game library with great RPGs. Better reliability than "old" NES.
Cons:Lackluster sports titles. Console turns a strange yellow after time.
The Bottom Line: Super NES is a durable classic that should have a place in everyone's house.

In 1990 Nintendo made a release that changed the face of gaming. They released Super Famicom in Japan. Nintendo's first 16 bit system. Super Famicom was aimed directly at Sega's already two year old 16 bit Genesis. In August of 1991 Super Famicom was renamed and released in North America. It was the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Nintendo was off to a shaky start. SNES was released with few games compared to the original NES that was released along with 17 games. Genesis had a very large library by then and Sega drew in potential SNES customers. The few games for SNES were good ones though. Super Mario World and F-Zero to name a few. SNES's CPU runs at a sluggish 3.58 MHz compared to Genesis's 7.6 MHz.(N64 runs at 93.75 MHz)
1992 was a better year for Super NES. RPGs like Zelda and Chrono Trigger saved Nintendo's sales. Soon after Nintendo released 3D-like games such as Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct. Here's where Nintendo's glory ended. Nintendo wanted to keep keep up with Sega CD and began work with Sony on SNES CD. The idea behind it was that this would let companies create high capacity games at low costs.
Nintendo lost interest with SNES CD and Sony decided to use the disc drives in it's own system.(Playstation)After that Nintendo had its sights on Nintendo 64 and SNES games dwindled. The last good game for SNES that was released was definitely Mario RPG:The Legend of the Seven Stars. In the middle 90s Nintendo redesigned the SNES. It had the same power with fewer chips and and a smaller size. Even with the redesign SNES was considered obsolete by most gamers.

Now the review.
SNES is a great gaming system. It has a large library of games.(Most now under $10) The six button control pad feels good in your hand. I've had my SNES for 10 years now and it operates like new. The console has acquired a strange yellow tint that wont come off with anything.(anyone else have this problem?)Appearance means nothing to me so I basically forgot about it. I enjoy playing this system as often as my PS2.

I have provided a list of my favorite games that are must haves in every household below.

1.Super Mario World- this one introduces Marios lovable sidekick Yoshi.

2.Super Mario Cart- must have multiplayer with all the characters from Super Mario Bros. series.

3.Super Mario All-Stars- contains many NES Mario originals

4.Zelda- Great RPG.

5.Chrono Trigger- Another great RPG.

6.F-Zero- Fun racing title.

7.Mario RPG:Legend of the Seven Stars- Newest SNES RPG with great battle mode in 3D.

8.Donkey Kong Country 1,2 and 3- These games are in 3D and are simply addictive.

9.Sim City- Build and destroy cities.

10.Super Metroid- Voted the best game ever by EGM magazine.
