Hiya Vasilis!
Thanks, bro! :o) I have too good a time roaming around Youtube checking out operatic stuff. It's really a great place to discover works and voices I hadn't heard before.
Wishing you and yours a very Happy 2008! Hronia Pollia!

Hiya Pambo,
Thanks a bunch, bro. ;o) It was pretty much on a whim. I was having such a great time checking out these clips on Youtube that I thought they'd be useful to use to introduce opera to those who hadn't seen/heard it before. Hope you found some you enjoyed as much as Pavarotti!
Thanks again for stopping by!
Cheers,
Smorg :o)

What a Great Idea (Reply to this comment)

It never would have occurred to me to do YouTube reviews, but why not? You've practically created a new Epinions category with this idea.
Excellent review--I'll join the chorus of people who know little to nothing about opera but Pavarotti's Nessun Dorma, plus the YouTube clip I saw the other day of his singing with James Brown, are absolutely stunning. Thanks for a wonderful review and a new idea.

Hiya Diana & Rob! (Reply to this comment)

Hope your Thanksgiving went well! :o) I'm afraid I overstuffed myself so much on turkey that I am now half-avian. Very thankful for the few weeks break before Christmas arrives!
Hey, I hope you'll enjoy the youtube clips indeed. ;o) I'm finding that site very addictive, and keep looking forward to new clips of my favorite singers. It's mind-boggling how they can sing all that amazingly difficult music so beautifully while doing all the acting they're required to do on the stage... and having to pay enough attention to the conductor in order to stay in sync with the orchestra... And unlike in pop/rock concerts, these guys don't lip-sync! It's live! I have a much easier job by comparison.
Thanks a bunch for stopping by. Hope your week has started well!
Cheers,
Smorgy :o)

I know almost nothing about opera but have enjoyed your very well written reviews. Now I can give a listen to some of the pieces and people you write about.
Way cool.

Hiya Telynor & Stephen! (Reply to this comment)

Hey, sorry old Vilja spooked you out of sailing, Stephen! I'm afraid I still haven't developed a good ear for deciphering operatic sung English and it took me a few minutes into #13 to realize that June Anderson is singing in the language! ;oP Very surprised at how good Borodina's French is, though.
Ooooh! Must have an encore of the next 15 favorite clips just to get Franco onto it. Thanks a bunch for the reminder, Telynor! :o) Will try to find a clip of him doing Celeste Aida... A finer Italian dramatic tenor than Corelli, I haven't found yet (well... Kraus and Domingo are very good, too, but still).
Thanks very much for stopping by! Hope y'all are having a great Thanksgiving!
Cheers,
Smorgy :o)

Have you tried any (Reply to this comment)
by telynor, in Music
Franco Corelli? The first time I heard him belt out Nessun Dorma I was floored, he's got a slightly stronger range than Pavarotti, and talk about a stage presence! Woof. I do have to admit a certain bias towards Kiri Te Kanawa, Beverly Sills and Cheryl Studer as they were the first influences in my learning about opera and all that. Great list, and one that has some new voices to discover. Thank you! --Telynor

Hiya T, Barbara, Jack, Nick, & Dusty! (Reply to this comment)

T: I've never even seen/heard the Garanca, Dessay and Quasthoff clips you list here, not to mention most of the Wagnerian ones by those greats (but am quite familiar with the fine Kasarova bits)! Thanks so much again for this! Now I have other clips to view besides those of them cute and adorable boxer puppies!
There are loads of wonderful opera clips on Youtube indeed, T! :o)
I haven't found the adorable boxer puppies yet, but have been enjoying some clips of instrumental pieces as well. Have you seen this Liszt transcription of Isoldes Liebestod yet? (www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TUJiZ7tOG0)
Barbara: you are the best, thanks for the great comment you left on my last review...;)
Hope you have a great Thanksgiving. A beintot
Avec plaisir, mon amie. ;o) Great write up on the wonderful French Sparrow! She pops up in my head once in a while, often singing Milord. Don't know why that tune tends to get stuck in my head! Happy Thanksgiving to you, too! :o)
Jack: My gosh.. Varnay is amazing. Thanks for this compilation of clips!
Hey Jack! She was, wasn't she? I find it hard not to scream 'NO!' when she runs off with that baby. Must have been a traumatic experience for those experiencing that live. I wish I could have heard her live just once. :o)
Nick: What a clever and useful post!!!!
Great idea, well done.
Thanks, Nick. :o) Hopefully it would stir some interest for the opera. Some of these clips have got to do away with the usual misconceptions among non-classical fans of what this genre is about.
Dusty: There's lots of choices to listen to and I do plan on "listening." How easy you make it look to write about Opera!
Hey, I'm flattered now, Dusty. Thanks. :o) You did very well yourself on your first review of a classical music CD! Hope you'll have a great time exploring these clips, matie.
Thanks all very much for stopping by! Hope everyone is feeling well and looking forward to a very Happy Thanksgiving, too! :o)
Cheers,
Smorgy
